Teaching Focused Faculty Position Description
The Department of Health Care Organization and Policy, School of Public Health at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks applications for a dynamic teacher to join our Department. We are seeking applications from individuals with a doctoral degree in Public Health or a closely-related field. For applicants with a doctoral degree in a discipline other than Public Health, an MPH is required. Demonstrated excellence in teaching is required for this position. This can take the form of previous experience developing and teaching courses (independently or as a teaching assistant/secondary instructor), experience preparing and delivering education programs related to health, and/or leadership in a technical-assistance capacity that involved interacting with large groups. All experience should be clearly documented in a Teaching Portfolio which also outlines the applicant’s teaching philosophy, an evaluation of their teaching skills, and details on teaching-related professional development activities.
This is a non-tenure earning, full-time (12-month) position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Initial rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The expected teaching load is 5-8 courses per year (including summer); the teaching assignments will include undergraduate and graduate level courses. The graduate level courses will include the departmental introductory course, both online and in-person versions. Other courses will be assigned based on the applicant’s interests or in response to programmatic needs. Although excellence in teaching will be the primary responsibility, continued connection to public health practice and research is critical, so the applicant may cover a portion of their salary through participation in funded research or practice.
To apply, applicants must submit all of the following: a cover letter outlining how the applicant meets the specific criteria described above, CV, and a comprehensive teaching portfolio. Letters of reference including at least one that addresses the applicant’s teaching ability will be requested following initial review of application packets. Applicants selected for an on-campus interview will give a teaching demonstration which highlights their teaching strategies and approach to teaching diverse students. The anticipated start date is July 2023. To apply, please visit the following link to submit your application: http://uab.peopleadmin.com/postings/6062
