Vice President for Inclusion, Equity and Community

Carleton College invites nominations and applications for its inaugural Vice President for Inclusion, Equity and Community (VPIEC). The vice president will serve as a visible and engaged leader and will provide vision and strategic direction for policy and programming around all aspects of inclusion, equity, and community to advance this vital work. Importantly, this leader will sit on the President's Cabinet senior leadership team and will report to the President to have broad, effective, and campus-wide reach and influence.

Carleton is one of the nation's leading liberal arts colleges and ranked #1 by U.S. News and World Report year after year for "Best Undergraduate Teaching." The College attracts an academically excellent student body and is committed to increasing its socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, and geographic diversity among students, staff, and faculty to better realize its educational mission. The campus community values its rich cultural and lived experience, a diversity of thought and ideas, and unmatched teaching in a close-knit community where intellectual curiosity leads to a lifetime of exploration .

The VPIEC will work in partnership with the President, senior staff, and the broader campus community to lead efforts that create inclusive participation and leadership throughout the college. As an impactful leader of the community, the vice president will collaborate with intention, communicate with transparency, amplify successful structures, implement policies and programs, and build new campus initiatives while forging strong connections with students, faculty, staff, trustees, and alumni. The vice president will lead a new office of Inclusion, Equity, and Community at Carleton that will include administrative support and the opportunity to hire an additional colleague to work under the direction of the vice president.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated progressively responsible administrative experience that includes the advancement of diversity and inclusion initiatives, budgets and other resources in a college or university environment, proven success in working with diverse constituents on complex issues, and a high level of cultural awareness and responsiveness, sensitivity, humility, and discretion. An understanding and appreciation of the culture of liberal arts colleges, and of federal legislation related to diversity and equity in education is desired.

In addition, the Vice President for Inclusion, Equity and Community will have a deep understanding and awareness of, and sensitivity to, the experiences of marginalized identities; bring a global perspective; and be a champion and nurturer of collaborative relationships. Expected to build upon momentum around a recently completed Community Plan for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Carleton, the VPIEC will bring a proven record of accomplishment in translating vision into strategic planning, goal development and tactical efforts toward implementation to achieve outcomes with a related ability to establish clear metrics, and a process by which to chart progress. The vice president will possess excellent communication skills and the ability to respond effectively and dynamically to concerns of a community of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the Board of Trustees. An advanced graduate or professional degree from an accredited college or university is required, doctoral degree preferred.
