Associate or Professor of Music, Director of Orchestral Studies, The Martha Raley Peak Endowed Chair

The Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University seeks an artist conductor-pedagogue to serve as Director of Orchestral Studies, beginning August 2023. The selected candidate will hold the Martha Raley Peak Endowed Centennial Chair in Music. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience.

Qualifications

REQUIRED: Master of Music degree or equivalent professional experience; established national/international reputation as an orchestra conductor and teacher; fluency with a wide range of repertoire, including new music, global genres, and the Western canon.

PREFERRED: Proven record of successful teaching in a school or conservatory of music within a university setting.

Responsibilities: Provide artistic and administrative leadership of orchestra program; conduct Meadows Symphony Orchestra; recruit and mentor graduate students; participate in activities of the Division of Music in a robust liberal arts university; maintain a national/international profile as a conductor; collaborate with Division of Music faculty and staff members. Additional duties as assigned, which may include advising, teaching conducting, and coaching chamber music. The Director of Orchestral Studies is encouraged to produce innovative programs of eclectic musics with varying ensemble sizes and presentations.
