The Opportunity

Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts (VCUarts) is seeking a seasoned administrative leader with faculty rank to assume a broad portfolio that supports a vibrant academic environment. Reporting directly to the VCUarts Dean & Special Assistant to the Provost for VCUarts Qatar, the Senior Associate Dean acts as a chief of staff as well as the Dean’s key advisor and strategic partner. The Senior Associate Dean must be able to prioritize, execute, and follow through on senior-level matters and initiatives related to recruitment and admissions, Finance, Human Resources, Facilities/Operations and Information Technology. This person will streamline the leadership teams’ collaborative work to ensure the best outcomes when implementing the vision and priorities of the Dean and VCUarts. Besides providing oversight on the Richmond campus, this position will liaise with the leadership at VCUarts Qatar in order to ensure effective management and operations of that campus. 

Major Responsibilities include:  

  • Support the vision and priorities of the Dean
  • Supervise directors and executive directors
  • Use data to monitor trends in recruitment, admissions, enrollment, budgets, and salaries, proposing necessary adjustments to operations accordingly
  • Interpret and communicate policies and procedures to the staff, faculty and other university offices as necessary
  • Administer and manage processes and operations among VCUarts’ administrative teams
  • Contribute to VCUarts as a whole by providing leadership in planning, implementing and evaluating operational and administrative processes under the direction of the Dean
  • Participate in strategic planning and evaluate the administrative impact of long-range planning
  • Represent the School of the Arts at university and national committees as appropriate
  • Maintain productive communication and relationships with university wide administrators
  • Guide the development of the school's recruitment initiatives and monitor school Admissions and enrollment outcomes
  • Review and approve Human Resources requests to the Offices of the Provost and

Human Resources, and financial submissions to the Offices of the Provost and Budget

  • Assemble and complete critical components of the annual accreditation report, and oversee national/international ranking timelines in order to coordinate school-wide promotional outreach
  • Provide reports to the Dean, as requested, to include, but not limited to, those needed for program evaluation and accreditation, monitoring and evaluation of programs/services and students, and act as a liaison between staff and faculty
  • Create a positive, inclusive work climate that promotes effective and productive working relationships among faculty, staff, administrators and students
  • Ensure compliance with state and university policies and procedures, school practices and guidelines, and U.S. federal laws and regulations 
  • Develop effective collaborations with the campus in Doha, Qatar, and serve as counsel and a resource to the Dean and Associate Deans at VCUarts Qatar on matters of administration
  • Engage with VCUarts Qatar admissions, provide oversight of enrollment, facilitate its reporting to the VCU Office of Strategic Enrollment Management
  • Ensure compliance with operating agreements, review external audit reports and participate in developing annual and 5-year budgets, business plans and new funding requests
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Required Qualifications and Experience:

The Senior Associate Dean must have:

  • Master’s degree or higher from a US accredited institution or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Experience as university/college faculty 
  • Substantial administrative experience with demonstrated experience working with at least two of the following: Admissions, Finance and Human Resources, in US higher education 
  • Executive-level strategic skills with the capacity to negotiate numerous assignments, priorities and shifting demands; demonstrated high level of initiative, resourcefulness, and attention to detail
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent supervisory and managerial experience in building, supervising and mentoring effective teams, and building effective partnerships with executives across a university.
  • A significant understanding of issues and trends affecting higher education
  • High ethical standards that include the display of diplomacy and discretion, and maintaining confidentiality in sensitive situations with emphasis on consensus-building, flexibility and professionalism
  • Possess outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to navigate complex environments with numerous constituents
  • Demonstrated commitment to working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment

 

 

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience at an institution with disciplines represented at VCUarts, notably fine arts, design and/or performing arts
  • Evidence of creative and/or scholarly research
