Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) invites nominations and applications for the position of provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. The university seeks an innovative, strategic, and experienced leader who is energized to maximize opportunities for continued growth and excellence at Wisconsin's only public university with an access and research mission.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee offers a comprehensive and professional education at undergraduate and graduate levels across 15 schools and colleges to its more than 24,000 students on three campuses (83% of whom are from Wisconsin), which include two 2-year campuses in nearby Waukesha and Washington counties. UWM has achieved high standards in its unique role as the only public, urban, access, and research university in Wisconsin as noted by its R1 Carnegie Research Classification and Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement . With 200,000+ alumni, UWM has a $1.5 billion impact on the state economy and produces about 5,300 graduates a year who fill jobs in high-demand fields including architecture, business, computer science, education, engineering, health care, information technology, urban planning, and fresh water sciences.

Reporting directly to the chancellor, the provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs serves as the chief academic officer of the institution and is charged with the overall leadership, management, and administration of all academic units. UWM has successfully realigned its schools and colleges into a new structure to be effective July 1, 2023. The school and college structure will include the College of the Arts & Architecture, College of Community Engagement & Professions, College of Engineering & Applied Science, College of General Studies, College of Health Professions & Sciences, College of Letters & Science, Graduate School & Office of Research, Joseph J. Zilber College of Public Health, School of Continuing Education, School of Freshwater Sciences, and Sheldon B. Lubar College of Business. With an operating budget of about $659 million (including financial aid), the university offers 102 undergraduate majors, 67 master's degrees, one specialist degree program, and 38 doctoral programs. The provost manages and has oversight of all financial resources of the Division of Academic Affairs, which includes an annual budget of approximately $315 million, and co-oversees the university's annual budgeting process for all non-auxiliary divisions, including UWM's central infrastructure and administration. In addition, the provost works closely with leadership from the Board of Regents, University of Wisconsin System (UW System), and other UW System institutions on a myriad of issues advocating for and representing UWM's strategic directions and operational needs.

The incoming provost should demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence and student success, and have the experience necessary to guide an urban research university toward new levels of distinction. The next provost should have a deep appreciation for and an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion demonstrated by extensive experience in fostering successful outcomes for diverse students, staff, and faculty. Furthermore, the provost should bring a commitment to supporting faculty research and scholarship while ensuring the campus maintains its R1 Carnegie Research Classification. The provost will have significant administrative and academic leadership experience, including a track record of success managing a highly complex organization. As would be expected, strong fiscal and budgetary skills are required. The provost will be a strong communicator who is dedicated to transparency and the tenets of a transparent and shared governance campus environment. An earned doctorate is required, as is a distinguished record of academic achievement that commands the respect of the academic community. More information can be found at www.wittkieffer.com.
