Position description

The Department of Pathology at the University of California, San Diego ( http://pathology.ucsd.edu ) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body, and seeks an academic cytogeneticist to join the Division of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine and serve as an Associate Director of Medical Genetics and Genomics.

Based at the state-of-the art Center for Advanced Laboratory Medicine in La Jolla, the Clinical Genetics and Genomics Laboratories support not only UC San Diego Health's Jacobs and Hillcrest Medical Centers and the region's only NCI-designated cancer center, but also serves as a national/international referral leader in personalized and precision medicine.

Clinical sign-out and on-call responsibilities will be shared with other qualified faculty, who are focused on the cytogenetic/molecular genetic/genomic evaluation of cancer, inherited and rare genetic disorders, and prenatal screening. Teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows is also expected, along with continued scholarly contributions to clinical, translational, developmental and/or basic research.

The appropriate series and appointment at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level will be based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on the University of California pay scales. Appointments may require candidates to be self-funded.

As a member of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, the appointee should be aware that there are limitations on outside professional activities and clinical moonlighting is expressly prohibited. Qualifications


Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Candidates must have an MD, MD/PhD, or PhD in the biological sciences, chemistry, or clinical laboratory science or equivalent degree(s). Candidates must also have subspecialty fellowship training and be board certified/eligible in Clinical Cytogenetics or Laboratory Genetics and Genomics by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics or in Molecular Genetic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology (with two years of clinical practice experience in cytogenetics).

Candidates with a PhD only must also have or be eligible for California laboratory director licensure in clinical cytogenetics or equivalent as determined by the California Department of Public Health.

Candidates with an MD or MD/PhD must also have or be eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board of California, and be board- certified/eligible in Pathology, Clinical Genetics and Genomics, or another ABMS-medical specialty and/or subspecialty for medical staff appointment at UC San Diego Health.

Preferred qualifications
Candidates with experience in utilizing and developing contemporary cytogenetic/cytogenomic techniques and approaches to laboratory diagnosis and management, including chromosomal karyotyping, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and comparative genomic hybridization microarrays are preferred.

Candidates with clinical experience in molecular genetics and next-generation genomic sequencing , including familiarity with cell free DNA analysis for non-invasive prenatal testing are also preferred
