Provost and Chief Academic Officer

New Mexico State University

Provost and Chief Academic Officer:

New Mexico State University (NMSU) invites confidential inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Provost and Chief Academic Officer. The Provost reports directly to the Chancellor and is the chief academic officer for the university. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic, innovative, and collaborative leader who values diversity and social justice and shares our mission as a public, Hispanic-Serving and Minority-Serving Institution dedicated to serving our community. The next Provost is expected to take office in the Spring of 2023.

New Mexico State University sits on 900-acres and enrolls approximately 14,000 students from across the U.S. and 89 foreign countries. NMSU is a Land Grant, NASA Space-Grant University, and home to the very first Honors College in the state of New Mexico. As a proud Hispanic and Minority-Serving Institution, NMSU serves a multi-cultural population of students and community members across the state with three community colleges, four campuses, cooperative extension offices located in each of New Mexico's 33 counties, and 12 agriculture research and science centers.

NMSU's main campus is in Las Cruces, which provides a wide range of outdoor activities, art, cultural and culinary experiences. The New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) is located on NMSU's campus, and the NMSU Board of Regents serves as the state board of agriculture, thus solidifying the importance of agriculture to both the university and the state.

The strategic goals outlined in NMSU LEADS 2025 reflect the university's mission and vision and are vital to NMSU's success. These include advancing student success; elevating research and creativity; amplifying extension and outreach; and building a robust NMSU system. Additionally, the university will focus on a number of grand challenges facing the state and communities around the globe. These include creating healthy borders, modernizing critical infrastructure, and transforming education in New Mexico.

The Provost oversees all academic programs and provides general administrative supervision of all academic units of the university system. The Provost will work alongside other team members, including the Vice Presidents of Student Success; Research & Creativity; Equity, Inclusion & Diversity; President of Doña Ana Community College; Associate Vice Chancellor for External Relations and Executive Director for Branch Campuses (Alamogordo Community College and Grants Community College); and the Chancellor's Chief of Staff.

On the Las Cruces campus, the Provost oversees five academic deans and three service deans (the deans lead the Colleges of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences; Arts and Sciences; Business; Engineering; and Health, Education and Social Transformation; the Honors College, Graduate School, and NMSU Library). The Provost also oversees four associate provosts and numerous professional and administrative staff.

An earned doctorate degree from an accredited institution and a record of teaching and scholarship to merit appointment at NMSU at the level of full professor with tenure are required, as well as demonstrated experience of leading successful activities to insure diversity, equity, and inclusive environments for students, faculty members, and/or staff members.
