Associate Vice President for Strategic Initiatives & Dean of the Graduate College

The University of Northern Iowa seeks applicants for Associate Vice President for Strategic Initiatives & Dean of the Graduate College. This 12-month position advances the university's vision, mission, and strategic plan in relation to scholarship, research, and creative activity, engaged and applied learning, graduate studies, online and distance education, and external initiatives and partnerships.

This position works closely with campus leaders, including the Provost, Associate Provosts, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, Associate Dean of Continuing Education & Special Programs, and Director of Research & Sponsored Programs (RSP) to assist with faculty development, strategic initiatives, and other activities; works with faculty, Deans, Associate Deans, Department Heads, Associate Provosts, and Director of Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning to elevate and expand research and scholarship, and application of undergraduate and graduate student research; provides oversight for the Graduate College and Online Distance Education, including development and implementation of vision, mission, and strategic plan. The portfolio of work will be determined according to the expertise of the successful candidate.

Within the Graduate College, this position oversees recruitment initiatives, curricular initiatives, program assessment, budget and funding allocations, and supervision of staff; works with Associate Dean and Graduate Council to advance and elevate graduate programs; assists with providing leadership for meeting goals of enrollment master plan for graduate education; and implements and administers policies and regulations affecting graduate students.

In addition, this position oversees general operations of Continuing Education & Special Programs and UNI@Iowa Community Colleges (UNI@IACC) initiatives and partnerships, including strategic planning, staffing, marketing, budgeting, high-quality online and distance education course development; stays abreast of current and emerging trends in online and distance education; works with Director for RSP to facilitate positive campus culture of grant seeking and reportings; completes reports for and acts as liaison with Board of Regents, State of Iowa (BOR); and represents Provost's Office as requested.

Required qualifications include doctorate or other terminal degree; full Professor rank; at least five years of experience in higher education leadership; demonstrated knowledge and skills in graduate program planning and project management; evidence of extensive research and scholarly record over period of time, as well as ability to mentor others in scholarship; success in writing and applying for externally or internally funded grants; evidence of strategic thinking and implementation of successful collaboration and interdisciplinary work; ability to handle sensitive situations and information with discretion; experience with college/university personnel, policies and procedures, as well as current trends in higher education; outstanding communication skills in writing, speaking, and listening; and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
