Other Conditions: To begin approximately November 2022. R4 or R5 level to be funded up to 60% with State funds with the balance required from extramural funding. The extramural balance of 40% will be provided by the Institute for a minimum of two years.

In keeping with this mission, HNEI seeks applicants for a senior-level tenure-track faculty position to take a lead role in Hawai‘i’s and the nation’s transformations. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Establish, manage, and conduct a research program that will actively support Hawai‘i’s transition to a clean and resilient energy future across all sectors (e.g. electricity, transportation, and end-users). Results of this research would be expected to inform energy, carbon, and climate-change policies and regulations by integrating technical with economic analysis.

Develop and apply models to analyze impacts (e.g. technical, economic, environmental, and cultural) of energy infrastructure transformation to meet decarbonization goals and inform resilient energy system solutions.

Consistent with the area of focus, demonstrate responsiveness to the needs of the state and actively support the coordination of HNEI activities across Hawai‘i stakeholders. Support coordination of HNEI interactions with federal agencies, national laboratories, NGOs, international partners, and state government.

Alone or in collaboration with faculty members from various UHM units (e.g. SOEST, Economics, Engineering, Urban and Regional Planning, Law, and Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge), develop proposals relevant to state, national and international energy needs. Identify, procure and manage resources needed to meet specific program goals. Hire and supervise students and staff to meet objectives.

Develop and execute an education/outreach program for energy stakeholders, including the general public through community service, and support informed energy policy and regulatory decision making.

Address critical work-force needs in Hawai‘i and globally by actively participating in the UHM educational mission through teaching, coordination of course development with other UHM faculty members, and mentoring of students, visiting scholars, and professional staff.

Disseminate results of professional activities in peer reviewed publications, conference proceedings, and reports and other formats as appropriate.

Perform other duties as required.

Minimum qualifications:

Associate Researcher

Ph.D. from an accredited university of recognized standing in engineering, economics, policy, or other relevant discipline.

Successful candidates shall have four or more years of post Ph.D. professional experience conducting and managing an active research program relevant to the goals of the position, including but not limited to technical and economic analysis of energy systems, energy resilience, or energy infrastructure transformation. 

Demonstrated evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with institutional colleagues, industry, public stakeholders, and government agencies.

Demonstrated excellence in:

  • scientific and scholarly activities as evidenced by publication of peer-reviewed journal articles or other significant written work products;
  • research outputs related to integrated energy systems, regulatory analysis, or energy policy;
  • procuring, establishing, and managing funded projects;
  • participating in regional/national research groups or societies.

Demonstrated ability to plan and organize independent, substantive energy research projects.

Demonstrated ability to plan and organize the work of subordinates. 

Full Researcher

In addition to the minimum qualifications for Associate Researcher as stated above:

Eight or more years of post Ph.D. professional experience conducting and managing an active research program in areas such as energy systems, resilience, and infrastructure transformation.

Desirable qualifications:

Demonstrated participation in programs intended to inform energy, carbon, and climate-change policies and regulations.

Demonstrated experience working with federal or state governmental agencies in the energy sector.

Experience in coordinating activities across broad groups of energy stakeholders. 

Substantial knowledge of the organization and programs of relevant federal funding agencies.

Working knowledge of Hawai‘i clean energy initiatives and current energy situation.
