Dean, College of Business

The University of Rhode Island

THE SEARCH

The University of Rhode Island (URI), the state’s flagship land and sea grant research institution, seeks a visionary, strategic, and entrepreneurial leader to serve as its next dean of the College of Business (COB). This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a highly regarded business school to new heights at Rhode Island’s premier research university. With a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service, the dean will work in collaboration with senior leadership, faculty, staff, and students to lead the College into its next defining chapter.

The next dean will join the URI community at an exciting time as it celebrates the centennial anniversary of the College of Business and as recently appointed President Marc Parlange embarks on a bold strategy to extend and amplify the University’s presence as a leading research institution. Working closely with university leadership, the dean will be tasked with assisting in the implementation of a new university-wide strategic plan while concurrently developing a new strategic vision for the College of Business.

Reporting to the provost, the dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer for the College and is responsible for the management of its resources, including faculty and staff, physical facilities, and budget. The College is home to over 75 faculty members, whose commitment to over 2,100 undergraduate students and 375 graduate students fuels their teaching and acclaimed research. The College of Business features five academic areas (Accounting, Management, Marketing, Finance, and Supply Chain Management) and one department (Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design).

The next dean will leave a lasting impact and legacy within the COB by creating a distinctive brand that is anchored in the quality of its academic programs, preeminence of its research, and impact on the challenges facing the business world and society today. Under the next dean’s leadership, the COB will advance the university-wide commitment to community, equity, and diversity by further diversifying and supporting COB faculty, staff, and students from historically underrepresented groups, articulating an understanding of the educational and social value of a diverse community, and fostering an inclusive educational and workplace climate. As the public face of the College, the dean is the most prominent advocate for business education at URI and will enthusiastically tell the College’s story to alumni, corporate leaders, and high-potential supporters in Rhode Island, New England, and beyond. The dean will prioritize student success through innovative curricular and co-curricular approaches that meet the needs of a new generation of students, inspiring them to envision what they can achieve in the future.

The successful candidate will be a champion for teaching and scholarship, have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, high energy, political astuteness, a deep commitment to diversity, and a personal style that engenders trust and respect. The dean will be visible on campus and in the community and must have an appreciation and passion for the mission of higher education at a public, land-grant research university.
