Dean and Deputy Director of the School

The International Center of Photography (ICP) seeks a Dean and Deputy Director (Dean) who brings a compelling vision for the future of art education and a knowledge of, and affinity for, progressive approaches to contemporary art practice and new media. The dean will create a welcoming environment for students and faculty to collaborate, engage in imaginative - yet rigorous - curriculum, and pursue successful careers as working artists.

ICP is the world's leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. Through its exhibitions, education, public programs, and community outreach, it offers an open forum for dialogue about the power of the image. Since its founding in 1974, ICP has presented more than 700 exhibitions and offered thousands of classes, providing instruction at every level. It's new integrated center on the Lower East Side reunites the school and museum in one dynamic cultural center boasting state-of-the-art education facilities and access to New York's rich cultural and artistic resources.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Dean will serve on the senior team and provide vision and leadership for all educational programming with priority placed on public engagement and meeting the learning needs of students. An active participant in the vibrant ICP community, the Dean oversees and implements a broad scope of full-time and part-time educational classes, programs, and community engagement activities. The Dean serves as chief academic planning officer and is responsible for creating a vision for an evolving and innovative curriculum; aligns ICP's classes and educational model with changing definitions of ICP's core mission of concerned photography within a multimedia world; and collaborates with colleagues inter-departmentally across the educational department and museum. The Dean must possess a broad historical and theoretical knowledge of art and be committed to the role of photography and media education in a contemporary culture.

The next Dean possesses a leadership style that promotes clarity of direction, communication, collaboration, innovation in educational programming, curriculum development and evaluation, and promotion of public-facing events and the highest level of teaching. The Dean must possess a passion for advancing the mission and strategic goals of ICP as well as a commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion. This involves developing and effectively implementing strategies, systems, policies, and programs that support an open and welcoming culture. This charge also includes the assessment and management of the School's infrastructure and resources as it grows and develops in the coming years. The School is staffed by 20 professionals 30 adjunct faculty and supported by a $3 million budget, which is projected to grow over the coming academic year.

The Dean must have a deep understanding of the financial models of higher education, including recruitment, enrollment management, and admissions. Fiscal program management is a requisite, and the Dean must be highly skilled as an advocate and evaluator of programs, staff, and academic faculty. In addition to being an enthusiastic and inventive problem solver, the Dean should be an adaptive and agile colleague with a capacity for patience, openness, and a transparent approach to communication. The Dean should be a leader that can cultivate an environment of trust, respect, cooperation, and diversity among faculty, staff, and students. Above all, the incoming dean should be passionate about and serve as an advocate for photography, both at the center and globally.
Relevant leadership, administrative, and managerial experience in higher education or a major arts or cultural institution is desired.
