Santa Clara University seeks an innovative, collaborative, scholarly, and student-centered academic leader with a deep commitment to the values of a Jesuit, Catholic education to serve as its new executive vice president and provost.
Founded in 1851, and located in the heart of Silicon Valley, Santa Clara University blends high-tech innovation with an emphasis on personal, humanistic formation, and social consciousness that animate the Jesuit Catholic tradition . In the 2022 "Best Colleges" rankings of U.S. News & World Report, Santa Clara was ranked at No. 55, among the top 15% of 400 national universities. Santa Clara has six nationally recognized schools and colleges. Of those, five - arts and sciences, business, engineering, education and counseling psychology, and law - are located on the main campus in Santa Clara, and the Jesuit School of Theology is located in Berkeley. Through more than 50 majors, minors, and special programs, and undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degree programs, the University seeks to educate citizens and leaders of competence, conscience, and compassion, who cultivate knowledge and faith to build a more humane, just, and sustainable world. This is an exciting time for Santa Clara with the appointment of the University's first non-Jesuit and woman president in July and the elevation of Santa Clara into the national rankings. The campus community is ready for innovation and change, invigorated by a steadfast commitment to the University's mission and core values , motivated to increase support for faculty research, scholarship, and creative activity, and dedicated to providing a rigorous educational experience centered on social justice. The role of the provost has been elevated to executive vice president and provost (EVP/Provost), reflecting the centrality and primacy of the academic program and student life missions of the University and signifying the vital role the new leader will play in partnering with the President to enrich academic programs and integrate academics and student life; champion a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging; and bring exceptional leadership to further refining the teacher-scholar model, which promotes a balance between teaching and scholarship.
The new EVP/Provost, in partnership with the president and campus community, will define a compelling, innovative, and distinctive vision for the future of the academic program at Santa Clara in accord with the distinctive tradition of cura personalis - educating each person to flourish in mind, body, and spirit. This vision will be centered on the cultivation of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community where all members feel a sense of belonging. The EVP/Provost will advocate for the needs of the faculty engaged in meaningful scholarship and transformative classroom teaching, champion a staff tasked with supporting the campus community, and advance a shared governance model based on transparency, trust, and collaboration.
To achieve these objectives, Santa Clara seeks an EVP/Provost with energy and enthusiasm to invigorate and galvanize the community around a common vision for the future of a nationally-ranked university distinguished by the teacher-scholar model and the holistic formation of students at its foundation. The EVP/Provost will have experience as a student-centered academic leader within an institution of similar complexity and with a substantial record of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. It will be important for the EVP/Provost to be an advocate for the needs of faculty and staff and be able to foster a sense of campus community, including cultivating relationships among the schools and the College of Arts and Sciences. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to faculty excellence in scholarly research, creative activity, and teaching and have the ability to lead a community that inspires and fosters them as well as the capacity to build, develop, and empower academic leadership. A creative and entrepreneurial spirit, an ability to engage stakeholders in meaningful ways, and skill in building consensus will be essential for success. The ideal candidate will be able to advance the academic vision and serve as a persuasive communicator of the distinctive character and mission of a Jesuit Catholic university.
