Clinical Research Operations Officer

Saint Louis University (SLU) School of Medicine, a private, Catholic institution with a long history of excellence in education, research, and patient care, invites applications and nominations for the newly created position of Clinical Research Operations Officer (CROO). In the fiscal year 2021, SLU’s medical center researchers in the health sciences were awarded 286 grants, contracts, and subcontracts for basic, translational and clinical research totaling $36 million.

Reporting to the Vice Dean for Research in the School of Medicine, the CROO is accountable for oversight of fiscal and operational activities for all clinical research in the School of Medicine. They will partner with the physician-leader Associate Dean for Clinical Research. Together, the CROO and Associate Dean will develop and facilitate an excellent process for evaluating opportunities, building collaborations, and facilitating the administrative and business aspects of clinical research.

The Clinical Trials Office at Saint Louis University supports innovative clinical investigative research at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, especially as related to the oversight and coordination of industry sponsored clinical trials. Under the CROO’s management, the Clinical Trials Office will include a more structured centralized service portfolio, clear roles and responsibilities for providing services, and opportunities to build and develop clinical research in the School of Medicine and with collaborations throughout Saint Louis University.

A key area of focus will be the facilitation of activities across multiple administrative and departmental units in support of research initiatives of the faculty and staff. As the senior business manager for clinical research, the CROO will provide guidance, information, advice, and counsel to faculty and staff concerning administrative initiatives associated with clinical research.

These structural investments will provide the foundation for a research strategic plan that aims at the growth of clinical research at SLU.

  • BS/BA in a related field (required)
  • An advanced degree with an emphasis in finance, business, health care, or a relevant field, such as a Master of Business Administration (preferred)


  • A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible relevant professional experience in financial planning, management, analysis, forecasting, modeling, or administration of a research or clinical unit
  • Progressively responsible experience within a complex, research or healthcare environment
  • Progressively responsible experience leading, coaching, hiring, and managing team performance
  • Directly related financial and budget development experience in a complex research or matrixed environment
  • Significant experience within an academic health sciences environment
  • Knowledge of research funding and appreciation for working in a research-intensive academic culture


Preferred Competencies

  • Experience using Electronic Medical Records Systems, Enterprise Resource Systems and Medical Group Practice Billing and Financial Management Systems
  • Track record of success in focusing on strategic objectives and translating such objectives into successful short- and long-term results for the organization
  • Demonstrated success in supporting medical research with the ability to effectively identify opportunities for improvement in support functions
  • Proven financial management skills, including the ability to analyze data for budgeting, operations, auditing, and accounts receivable and reserve analysis, and to prepare a range of financial and other reports and analyses
