Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies
The Conservatory of Music at Capital University invites applications for the full-time tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies. The successful candidate will lead one of the nation’s first collegiate jazz programs. The candidate will coordinate the jazz area and curriculum which effectively bridges traditional areas of jazz education and performance with a strong commitment to an expanded improvisatory spectrum that reflects the global nature of 21st century music. Duties include directing the Big Band (Capital’s premier large jazz ensemble) and teaching courses in improvisation, jazz theory and jazz audiation. Additional responsibilities may include teaching applied music, jazz history, jazz arranging, jazz pedagogy, directing a jazz combo, performing in Spectrum (the faculty jazz combo), and other courses or responsiblities based on the background and interests of the candidate, or as assigned by the Dean. Responsibilities will also include coordination of Capital’s annual Jazz and World Music Festival, which features concerts and a high school jazz festival. Coordination of the Masters of Music in Music Education in Jazz Pedagogy during the summer (with additional stipend) is expected. The successful candidate will also maintain an active profile of service and artistic activity, provide academic advisement to students, participate on committees, and provide service to the university and profession. Strong consideration will be given to candidates with college teaching experience and evidence of success with student recruitment.
Salary is Assistant Professor level and dependent on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. This is a 9-month contract beginning in Fall 2023.
Qualifications: Doctorate in Music or a Master in Music degree with equivalent and relevant professional experience. Evidence of engaging jazz/improvised music performance and successful pedagogy that embraces both traditional and broader global styles. Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively and in a collegial, professional manner with students, faculty, and staff and continuing to develop Capital’s storied jazz program through an active commitment to recruiting diverse populations of students.
