POSITION SUMMARY: The postdoc (PD) will work as part of a team on an NSF grant to PIs John Orrock (UW Madison) and co-PI Lynn B. (Marty) Martin at USF. The principal duties and obligations of the appointment are to conduct research in accordance with the needs of the funded NSF grant on Lyme disease ecology, especially rodent immunology and behavior. The 4y project will use tissue samples from NEON, the NSF National Ecological Observatory Network, to investigate how covariation between immunity and behavior in individual Peromyscus mice influences spatiotemporal variation in Lyme disease risk across the eastern US.  The postdoc will perform and coordinate assays in the lab, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, publish high-quality articles in peer-reviewed journals, and present research at national/international scientific conferences.  Opportunities also exist for teaching undergraduate courses (e.g., immunology, evolutionary medicine), learning and contributing to scicomm efforts (the Big Biology podcast,, participating in a Research Coordination Network (RCN) directed at growing organismal biology research within NEON (Martin is co-PI on the RCN grant), and developing and executing independent research projects associated with the main grant on Lyme disease ecology. As Martin’s lab is part of both the Center for Genomics and Global Health and Infectious Disease Research Center at USF, training and collaborative opportunities will also abound for the successful candidate. The initial appointment will be for 1 year with subsequent years of support possible pending successful candidate progress. Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have a PhD in biology or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications: Proficient in gene expression analyses including RNA extractions and digital droplet or real-time quantitative PCR and basic statistical analyses and packages. Some background in Lyme disease biology or vectored disease ecology and immunology is desirable, but not imperative. Record of academic and research achievements. Candidates must be highly motivated, think independently and willing to work as part of integrated multidisciplinary research team.

The principal duties and obligations of the appointment are to conduct research in accordance with the needs of the funded research program and to generate data that will result in significant articles published in highly ranked, peer-reviewed research journals.
