The President and the Board of Trustees of the University of Massachusetts announce a search for the position of Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Founded in 1863 as an agricultural college, UMass Amherst is now a globally recognized land grant university with more than 24,000 undergraduates and more than 7,800 graduate students from all 50 states and nearly 100 countries. Its students are highly engaged through more than 270 student organizations. There are nearly 300,000 UMass Amherst alumni around the world.
UMass Amherst’s 11 schools and colleges award Bachelor’s degrees in 111 fields, Associate’s degrees in five, Master’s degrees in 79, and Doctorates in 49. UMass Amherst employs 6,412 people, including 1,460 full-time faculty members, and is ranked 26th among the top public national universities in U.S. News 2022 Best College rankings.
UMass Amherst faculty members have been the recipients of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award for Poetry, the National Medal of Science, the Draper Award in Engineering, and the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award, and have been selected for the Fulbright Scholars Program. Their work has been recognized by the MacArthur Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Sloan Foundation, and the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, as well as the National Endowment for the Arts. Faculty have been elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine. The institution is distinguished by the excellence and the breadth of activities across its colleges and schools and is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a doctoral university with the "highest research activity," or R1. UMass Amherst secured, in fiscal year 2021, more than $287 million of sponsored research, including 455 federal awards totaling $221 million.
The 1,400-acre Amherst campus includes more than 13 million square feet of buildings, including: the 28-story W.E.B. DuBois Library with more than six million volumes, the 9,000-seat multi-purpose William D. Mullins Center (home to the 2021 national men’s ice hockey champion Minutemen), and 52 campus residence halls in seven unique residential areas. The campus has undergone a physical transformation during the past 15 years with newly built or renovated facilities, including: the Studio Arts Building, Integrated Sciences Building, Life Science Laboratories complex, Design Building, Physical Sciences Building, the 1,400-bed residential/classroom Commonwealth Honors College, a state-of-the-art classroom and academic building, the Isenberg Business Innovation Hub addition, student union, student recreation center, Central Heating Plant, and the campus police station and emergency operations center. The historic Old Chapel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, underwent a complete renovation and opened in late 2016.
The university is located in the historic Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, about an hour from the scenic Berkshires, home to world-class performing arts centers such as Tanglewood (summer venue of the Boston Symphony Orchestra) and Jacob’s Pillow. The town of Amherst is two hours from Boston and three hours from New York City.
UMass Amherst is the largest of the five campuses of the statewide UMass System (Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth, Lowell, and the Chan Medical School in Worcester), and is also a member of the Five College Consortium, which facilitates course interchanges and faculty cooperation with nearby Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith colleges.
