Job Description Summary
The Division of Facilities and Real Estate Services (FRES) provides the expertise, business process, policies and standards required to plan, design, construct, operate, maintain and renew the physical assets of the University, excluding the health system. In addition, the Division, comprised of approximately five Departments, is responsible for the strategic planning, management and operation of non-academic University property, and collaborating with the neighborhood to create a safe, diverse and economically vibrant destination. With close to 12M square feet of space, FRES maintains 186 buildings on a campus of 276 acres, completes over 60,000 maintenance requests per year, and starts approximately 250 projects a year. FRES is comprised of the following Departments: Administration, Office of the University Architect, Design and Construction, Real Estate, Operations and Maintenance.

The University of Pennsylvania is implementing a campus transformation entitled Penn Connects ( ). This comprehensive, award winning effort is expanding the campus over the next 20 years, including the construction of new academic research and recreational facilities. In addition, the University has secured $300M in Century Bond funding and continues to upgrade existing facilities over the coming years.

Sustainability Analyst


Assist the Sustainability Director in implementation of the Climate Action Plan 3.0. As the primary data and metrics analyst, this individual will collect and report quarterly and annual sustainability performance metrics, contribute to Penn's sustainability communications efforts, and complete periodic updates of the Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS). Additional duties include management of the Penn Green Fund, Green Labs, and Freezer Reimbursement programs, applying for awards, assistance with management of the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee, liaise with the School and Center Sustainability Coordinators, and serve as the point person for outside organizations such as the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, AASHE, and the Sustainability Endowments Institute.

  • Sustainability Metrics: Track campus-wide sustainability metrics for energy use, high-performance buildings, transportation, waste minimization, academics, and communications. Prepare a quarterly report to SVP FRES and Sr. EVP. Track Expenses associated with these initiatives.
  • Tracking & Reporting Data Liaise with the AASHE and the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, and other external groups to provide updates on CAP3.0 progress. Manage internal communications to gather information and to complete the STARS, and track progress towards STARS annually. Manage and report progress towards CSAP goals, particularly building energy data.
  • Green Office Program: Manage Program, track office progress; advise applying offices, review submissions, and present award certificates. Track and aggregate metrics associated with the program.
  • Green Labs, Penn Green Fund and Freezer Reimbursement Program. Coordinate and run the Green Labs program, co-lead and track progress with the Green Labs working groups. Serve as point person for EHRS. Review applications and manage disbursements of funds, coordinate with partner stakeholders, and maintain databases of both programs. Review of mid-project report and final submission of Green Fund projects.
  • Integrating Sustainability across the Curriculum (ISAC) & Civic Sustainability Fellows: Recruit faculty and students for participation; review student applications; set up orientation meeting; and ensure student participation. Coordinate with community organizations to place Penn students in sustainability internships.
  • Management of sustainability intern staff, including direct management of two full-time summer interns and one part-time intern during the school year, as well as coordination of all FRES summer sustainability intern activities. Ensure budget and hiring processes run smoothly for summer interns.
  • LEED Credit Bank: Create and maintain LEED Credit Bank to assist design consultants and Penn capital project teams with LEED submissions.
  • Support the management of the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee and subcommittees, to update committee and subcommittee member on activities and reconvene group every semester.
  • City of Philadelphia Reporting: Review campus data and coordinate submittal to the City with Penn's Energy Management team, maintain account with Portfolio Manager, log submission receipt. City of Philadelphia Zero Waste Data tracking, and other sustainability metric reporting as required by the City of Philadelphia.
  • Partner with the Sustainability Office, students, faculty and the Center for Environmental Building Design to identify gaps and work towards more effective and accurate sustainability metrics. Effectively organize and display data to be included in office communications and publications.

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, planning, engineering, design, or humanities and 3 to 5 years of experience managing sustainability programs or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Master's degree preferred.
Also Required:
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and written and verbal communication skills;
  • Quantitative reasoning skills and the ability to comprehend, synthesize, and analyze sustainability data including metrics on energy use, waste diversion, transportation, and purchasing;
  • Knowledge of sustainability issues and best practices, including:
  • Energy conservation;
  • Waste minimization;
  • Sustainable transportation;
  • Design and planning strategies;
  • Outreach strategies;
  • Commitment to institutional and societal sustainability;
  • Ability to work both as a team leader and member, and complete projects with minimal supervision;
  • Commitment to diversity; ability to work effectively with all constituencies in a diverse institution;
  • Basic financial skills to track transactions and budget expenditures.
  • Experience in strategic planning, project management, team management, partnership building, and marketing;
  • Knowledge of higher education administration and issues;
  • Higher education experience

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
