Job Description Summary

The Communications and Engagement Manager will report regularly to and seek guidance from the AHE Project Director and Assistant Director, as well as the Faculty Director and Director of UHL but will function independently in carrying out most responsibilities. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrable engagement experience and strong writing skills.

Job Description

The Communications and Engagement Manager will be responsible for planning and executing the communications and engagement strategies for the Accelerate Health Equity initiative and the Penn Urban Health Lab (UHL). The Communications and Engagement Manager will report regularly to and seek guidance from the AHE Project Director and Assistant Director, as well as the Faculty Director and Director of UHL but will function independently in carrying out most responsibilities. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrable engagement experience and strong writing skills.

The Communications and Engagement Manager will manage all engagement activities related to AHE, a citywide initiative bringing together health systems, Independence Blue Cross, and the City of Philadelphia with the goal of reducing health disparities for Black Philadelphians. This involves working closely with an established Steering Committee, including outreach and maintaining engagement, fostering relationships and new partnerships with organizations and potential collaborators, and serving as a liaison for internal and external partnerships. This individual should be passionate about the health of Black communities and familiar with the Philadelphia area.

The Communications and Engagement Manager will work with the Director to develop content and communications associated with the Accelerate Health Equity website, including managing website updates ranging from associated project pages to maintaining a news and events page to updating the Health Equity Dashboard. The Manager will also be responsible for responding to incoming messages and outreach, creating and maintaining newsletters, quarterly reports, and an annual year-in-review document, as well as creating and updating social media feeds for AHE.

Secondarily, the Manager will establish and manage relationships with other communication professionals at Penn Medicine as well as the local media to promote Accelerate Health Equity's work. The Manager will develop strategies to promote and disseminate the AHE's work, achievements, and events via traditional and social media with the goal of ensuring that AHE's work has the greatest impact. Stakeholders who are the intended targets of communications include academic researchers, large healthcare system leaders, payers, policy makers, community organizations, and advocacy groups.

The Communications and Engagement Manager will also be integral in contributing to and implementing the communications plan for the Urban Health Lab (UHL) to facilitate reputation building and enhance stakeholder engagement. The UHL is dedicated to designing and testing individual and community-level interventions to build healthy neighborhoods. The UHL has a focus in urban nature, blight remediation, violence prevention, and structural racism that has impacted Black and Brown communities. Primary responsibilities include: creating digital content, managing UHL social media accounts and website, designing presentations, creating and disseminating newsletters, research and issue briefs, community outreach materials, infographics, and an annual impact report, and evaluating the effectiveness of communications strategies.

Qualifications

Experience developing and implementing engagement strategies and experience interfacing with diverse stakeholders (e.g., patients, families, or community organizations) - required.

Bachelor's degree and 5-7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Master's Degree and 3 to 5 years of experience preferred.

Demonstrated strong writing and editing skills - required.

Experience working in communications, preferably in a health care setting - preferred.

Experience interfacing and directing graphic designers- preferred.

Demonstrated ability to communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with team members, other University employees on an interpersonal level, both verbally and in writing; required.

Responsive service orientation -- positive, "can do" approach to initiatives, problems, and solutions; required

Excellent organizational skills -- able to prioritize work and manage time; required

Strong team orientation with the ability to be flexible with time and independently manage multiple priorities simultaneously; required

Proficiency with website design and "push" vehicles, such as Twitter and LinkedIn; preferred
