Job Description Summary
The Journals Manager is key member of the leadership team at Penn Press, responsible for strategic management of a portfolio of 20+journals each year, including planning and executing a business development strategy for the portfolio. The Journals Manager will oversee the annual budget and planning exercise for journals; take the lead in seeking new acquisitions for the portfolio in consultation with the Director; manage high-level relationships with learned societies, centers, and other journal partners; manage relationships with aggregation and licensing partners; manage contractual agreements with partners in consultation with the Director; liaise with the Marketing team and the Digital Asset Manager to assure efficient and effective use of our business systems; collaborate with the Director of Marketing and Sales and their team to effectively market our portfolio; and oversee an internal staff of two. The Journals Manager will collaborate with the Director,Business Manager, Editor in Chief, and other members of the leadership team on strategic goals for the journals program and Penn Press as a whole, including consulting with the Director about policy issues such as governance for journals, Open Access (OA) policies, and new publishing partnerships. A successful candidate will demonstrate leadership that inspires an innovative culture of mutual accountability, including attention to issues of inclusion and equity, in the service of Penn Press's mission-based publishing goals.

Duties:
  • Creating and overseeing execution of all journals division objectives for the Penn Press portfolio, including managing high-level relationships with journal partners, managing contracts for individual journals, overseeing annual budget and planning work.
  • Collaborate with the Director on a business development plan for Penn Press journals.
  • Working with Director and other department heads to envision and enact strategic plans for Penn Press as a whole.
  • Act as principal liaison and relationship manager for aggregation partners and other partner relationships, in collaboration with other journals and Press leadership staff as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Marketing and Sales to plan and execute effective marketing tactics for our journals portfolio,particularly with respect to libraries.
  • Collaborate with the colleagues to assure the most efficient and effective use of our business systems (website, TMS, etc.) in support of our journals program.
  • Responsible for staff management, including performance appraisals, recruitment, and development of talent and a Creating and overseeing execution of all journals division objectives for the Penn Press portfolio, including managing high-level relationships with journal partners, managing contracts for individual journals, overseeing annual budget and planning work.

Qualifications:

An undergraduate degree in any field. Eight years of relevant journals experience in publishing, scholarly communication, higher education, or related fields;
experience working with aggregation partners and libraries is especially desirable. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with leadership and staff in all departments of a publishing operation, including acquisitions, production, technology, and finance. Experience in planning and managing a department budget. An understanding of the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization. Strong verbal and written communication skills. The ability to be proactive and problem-solve in a dynamic environment. Leadership and team-building skills.
