Job Description Summary
The Director of Advancement Communications is responsible for overseeing a communications program that targets donors, alumni, and volunteers and generates support for the School's priorities. As part of a multi-function team including donor relations, events, graphic design, and digital media, the Director will work closely with the Executive Director to promote the reputation of the School and foster engagement among its supporters and alumni. The Director of Advancement Communications will also collaborate closely with SASOA's major gift officers and senior management team and will manage one direct report.

Penn Arts and Sciences forms the foundation of the scholarly excellence that has established Penn as one of the world's leading research universities. The largest of Penn's academic divisions, SAS is the home of 27 departments that represent a full range of disciplines. The College, SAS's undergraduate division, enrolls 6,500 students and is the largest undergraduate school at Penn. SAS also includes the Graduate Division, the College of Liberal and Professional Studies and numerous research centers and programs. The School's Office of Advancement recognizes the importance of the liberal arts as the source of knowledge that changes the world and education that changes individual's lives and is committed to generating enthusiasm and support for the School and its mission.

DUTIES:
  • Lead the School's advancement communications program, with a focus on highlighting fundraising priorities and managing a range of projects and initiatives to support alumni/donor engagement.
  • Oversee the work of one staff writer.
  • Provide creative input and write marketing copy in support of the School's annual fund programs.
  • Develop compelling web and print-based content to promote giving opportunities at the School and manage processes for maintaining updated materials in print and electronic formats.
  • Produce/oversee production and distribution of development and alumni engagement e-newsletters.
  • Develop major gift proposals to encourage donor investment in the School.
  • Draft remarks for all advancement events involving the Dean.
  • Manage content for the School website's alumni-facing content and contribute to the continuing enhancement of that site.
  • Coordinate with other members of the SASOA Communications team to incorporate fundraising objectives into the School's social media efforts.
  • Work with major donors to the School, fundraising staff, and other internal stakeholders to announce significant gifts; seek additional opportunities for publicity for gifts and/or major donors.
  • Liaison with the Director of Donor Relations to ensure consistency in messaging, accurate and appropriate recognition of donors in School and center University publications, and coordination of resources across the donor relations and communications teams.
  • Serve as SASOA liaison with DAR Marketing and Communications. Work in partnership with Penn DAR Marketing and Communications staff to leverage opportunities for visibility of School donors and initiatives in University-wide publications and portals.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree and 5 to 7 years of work experience in writing and producing publications are required, along with a strong portfolio of development communications projects, preferably in higher education. Excellent written and oral communication skills required; previous management experience strongly preferred. The position requires excellent professional judgment and the ability to communicate with tact and sensitivity with a broad range of constituencies including donors, faculty and senior administrators. Successful candidates must be highly creative and organized, with a proven ability to balance multiple concurrent priorities and work effectively in a large, complex institutional setting. Successful candidates will also reflect the core operating values of the SAS Office of Advancement, which include: demonstrated mutual commitment to excellence; professionalism, creativity and adaptability; respect for the roles and responsibilities of individual members of the SASOA team; a collaborative and collegial style, and transparency in communication.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
