Job Description:

This position supervises the circulation desk of the Charles Willard Coe Memorial library on weekends and evenings, and manages and develops programming for the M3Lab Makerspace.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversees the circulation desk at the Charles Willard Coe Memorial Library on weekends and evenings
  • Performs general circulation duties, including opening and closing the library, assisting students and faculty, checking out books, periodicals, and reserve materials, processing and shelving various types of library materials, monitors study room reservations, answers basic reference questions, and provides exemplary customer service to all library patrons
  • Serves as the on-duty supervisor of library student employees during weekends and some evenings
  • Leads training and workshops for student workers and the MSMU community in the makerspace
  • Ensures sufficient coverage for open hours and assists with class visits to the makerspace
  • Maintains a calendar and reservation system for the makerspace and oversees inventory of supplies
  • Registers user agreements and manages class and individual access to the makerspace
  • Closely supervises, trains, and mentors student employees to staff the makerspace, assist other students, and lead peer workshops
  • Develops and maintains clear instructions for all machines, projects, and materials in the space
  • Ensures the safety of students in the space by providing safety training for equipment and tools, and maintains best practices for safety procedures and protocols in the makerspace
  • Operates and maintains machinery and stations in the makerspace, including 3D printers, vinyl
  • cutters, laser cutters, sewing and embroidery machines, heat presses, and a variety of power and hand tools
  • Researches and recommends new technology and services in the makerspace
  • Works with faculty to develop makerspace projects and integrate them into the curriculum
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Works closely with the rest of the team to ensure sufficient staff coverage for the libraries' opening hours.
  • Shifts may be assigned at either campus library.
  • Work Schedules a.)The usual schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. Normal work hours are 8 hours per day until the last hour of the library's open hours with a minimum 30-minute meal break. b) When the library is closed on the weekend, the schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The work hours are 8 hours per day until closing with a minimum 30-minute meal break. c) Please note that the schedule is subject to change due to the occasional changes in the libraries' opening hours or staffing situations.

  • Requirements:

    • Knowledge of academic library operations in a diverse working environment
    • Working knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system, circulation procedures, and the library online catalog.
    • Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Office 365
    • General knowledge about makerspaces. Experience is a plus but not necessary.
    • Knowledge of creative design software such as Adobe Creative Cloud; Photoshop and Illustrator, TinkerCAD or other 3D modeling programs, Cricut Design Space, etc.

    Abilities and Skills:
    • Demonstrated evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    • Ability to adapt and learn new processes and skills.
    • Ability to write out procedures and training documents in clear, cohesive language.
    • Ability to manage students well.

    • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience required.

    • Experience using and maintaining 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and/or laser cutters is preferred
    • Experience troubleshooting equipment issues, including dealing with customer service departments and making small repairs
    • Experience adjusting designs in various programs
    • Experience working in a collaborative, team-based environment
