The specialist will play an integral role in developing and promoting both internal and external Center content, including updating and developing resources for websites and social media, drafting, formatting, and copy editing communications and marketing materials, and coordinating content production and stewardship documentation.

The Penn Brain Science, Translation, Innovation, and Modulation (brainSTIM) Center brings together a team of leading neuroscientists, neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and engineers from the University of Pennsylvania who use groundbreaking neuromodulation techniques to research, repair, and enhance human brain function. The Penn Center for Neuroaesthetics (PCfN) is the nation's first research center dedicated to understanding the biological basis of aesthetic experiences. By bringing innovative thinkers and creators in allied disciplines together, the PCfN aspires to define and advance a new scientific field and to establish itself as a destination for groundbreaking dialogue between neuroscience and the visual arts.

Due to the growth of both programs, a Scientific Communications Specialist is sought to promote their research and events, to disseminate their findings to wider audiences, and to support their development and partnerships. The specialist will play an integral role in developing and promoting both internal and external Center content, including updating and developing content for websites and social media, drafting, formatting, and copyediting communications and marketing materials, and coordinating content production and stewardship documentation.


As a Scientific Communications Specialist for both centers, you will work closely with senior leaders at BrainSTIM and the PCFN and researchers to provide outstanding scientific communications support intended for diverse audiences. Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with drafting, formatting, and copyediting Center communications, including marketing and promotional materials
  • Assist with updates to Center websites, including graphic design, content creation, and tracking user analytics
  • Support the Center's front-line communication needs, including moderating listserves, generating newsletters including content, and responding to general inquiries via email or other media platforms
  • Manage all social media accounts including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, blogs, etc. to enhance overall presence
  • Coordinate and generate content (print, digital, etc.) development and stewardship reporting
  • Seek media and marketing opportunities to promote and publicize work of Centers, and to grow our audiences and partners

Ideal candidates will have a record of communication excellence and teamwork, with a background in journalism or science writing.


  • A bachelor's degree and 3-5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Excellent writing, editing and professional communications skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to details.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and comfort with interpersonal engagement.
  • Proactive, flexible, and innovative; can adapt to changing priorities and needs; ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Experience managing content across channels (web, social media) and formats (print, digital, audio)
  • Experience with CMS platforms (MODX, Wordpress, etc)
  • Experience with MS Office, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and/or Illustrator

  • Background in journalism, with specific interest in healthcare and science writing.
  • Background in arts and culture
  • Experience managing large projects such as marking campaigns or conferences.

Position dependent upon funding.
