Reporting to the Senior Director of Advising, the Health Professions Advising Coordinator will utilize a holistic advising approach and knowledge about George Mason academic programs to help students explore health professions, and guide students as they navigate educational and other requirements for a health professions post-baccalaureate education. The coordinator will integrate their pre-health advising with students’ academic major program advising to identify a health-related field specific to students’ professional goals. In addition, the coordinator is expected to collaborate with university stakeholders (e.g., Career Services, department advisors, faculty, representatives from health professions schools) and other internal and external stakeholders to offer services to and provide resources for students interested in health professions in meeting their academic, career, and personal goals.
- Serve as knowledgeable and skilled health professions advisor for students interested in fields such as medicine, dentistry, podiatry, optometry, veterinary, pharmacy, and allied health professions such as physical and occupational therapy, physician assistant, athletic training, therapeutic recreation and other health professions;
- Provide scheduled individual and group advising, and walk-in advising to students interested in health professions; create model of differentiated service options based on individual student needs;
- Advise students on strategies for exploring academic, career, and personal interests, academic planning and preparation with the goal of becoming a competitive applicant for health professions programs;
- Advise students regarding their readiness and timing of health professions school application and how to navigate the application process;
- Support students during application process including application materials, timelines, admissions tests, personal statements, letters of recommendation, school selection, and interview process;
- Communicate and collaborate with colleagues and other constituents regarding health professions advising and trends;
- Maintain effective relationships and partnerships with George Mason University academic departments and academic advisors, was well as University Career Service’s Industry Counselors and internal and external partners and stakeholders regarding health professions advising and programming;
- Coordinate a Health Professions Advisory Board;
- Maintain active membership and participation in the National Association of Advisors for Health Professions (NAAHP) and other related professional organizations such as the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA);
- Coordinate programming to enhance awareness and knowledge of varied health professions fields. Manage communications and event announcements;
- Coordinate workshops and information sessions for health professions applicants through the application process;
- Represent Undergraduate Education at events hosted by Admissions, Orientation, University Career Services, and Academic Departments;
- Develop and maintain publications, website, listserv, and social media;
- Support health professions student organizations and their faculty/staff advisors;
- Develop relationships with Admissions/Recruitment Offices and Deans of health professions schools;
- Represent George Mason University at professional conferences and associations;
- Communicate timely with students via email, phone and other communication platforms, providing thorough and accurate responses to questions and concerns;
- Organize and maintain office files and student records;
- Work occasional evening and weekend hours, particularly in the summer, for orientation, related activities, and other required events; and
- Maintain consistent, and flexible, appointment calendar availability in Navigate (CRM) for student access to advising.
Assessment and Reporting
- Use the University CRM to maintain accurate records of students’ progress in meeting standards/deadlines regarding applications, admissions, and test scores, etc.;
- Report application outcomes and student success files; and
- Collect and maintain data pertaining to admission and acceptance rate of George Mason student to health professions programs.
Student Impact and Outreach
- Support admissions and orientation events, internship coordination processes to include internship advising and related paperwork, administrative and programming responsibilities, curriculum development, and/or other duties as assigned;
- Identify co-curricular opportunities, such as study abroad, undergraduate research, student activities and other campus events; and
- Develop resources and materials for student advising to be distributed to students electronically and physically.
Training and Technology
- Coordinator required to participate in university wide-advising onboarding training and continual professional development; and
- Coordinator required to utilize the university designated CRM platform for tracking and reporting student interactions and making referrals.
Other Duties As Assigned
- Attend regular meetings with key stakeholders involved in the development and implementation of programs; and
- Serve on committees and other projects as assigned.
- Master’s degree in health professions field of study or equivalent combination of education and experience required;
- Experience building partnerships with the university and external constituents associated with health professions careers and education required;
- Experience supporting students from diverse backgrounds interested in health professions required; and
- Demonstrated professional experience (typically one to three years) and leadership working in a university setting working with health professions or related field.
- Higher education experience in academic advising, teaching, counseling, or a related field knowledge to guide students through their college education toward their health professions career goals;
- Experience advising or teaching students interested in health professions;
- Experience in website development and use of various social media platforms;
- Knowledge of Mason curriculum, policies and processes;
- Experience with educational database management systems and customer relationship management systems (CRM);
- Prior experience in academic advising or student coaching programs; and
- Demonstrated experience with leadership, communication, program development, and administrative skills in their previous experience and interview process.
