Position Summary:
Monmouth University seeks an energetic, skilled and visionary leader to serve as the Interim Dean of the School of Science. The anticipated start date for this position is August 1, 2022 and it will conclude on June 30, 2023. Applications received by July 22, 2022 will receive fullest consideration.

The School of Science is comprised of four departments: Biology, Chemistry and Physics, Computer Science and Software Engineering, and Mathematics, and includes a Center of Distinction, the Urban Coast Institute (UCI). The School offers B.S. degrees in all disciplines and M.S. degrees in Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Information Systems. Student-faculty research collaboration is an emphasis of the School. Departments also support a substantial portion of the general education curriculum and science teacher education programs.

The Interim Dean reports directly to the Provost. As chief academic and administrative officer for the School, the Interim Dean is expected to provide leadership to promote excellence in the teaching, research and service missions of the School and to collaborate with other deans and leaders throughout the University. In alignment with the University's Strategic Plan, responsibilities include developing and implementing strategic priorities for the School; articulating and advocating the mission and goals of the School and the needs and interests of students and faculty; representing the School and the University to internal and external constituents; partnering with Admission and Enrollment Management to support student recruitment and enrollment quality; oversight of program assessment including quality of the general education curriculum delivered by the School; and providing community and professional outreach and service regionally, nationally and internationally. The Interim Dean provides fiscal management and advances department and programmatic initiatives, research, curricular innovations and other activities through securing external funds including fundraising. The Interim Dean facilitates efforts to recruit, develop and retain diverse and highly-qualified faculty, and makes recommendations on hiring, tenure, promotion and faculty reappointment.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated an excellent record of administrative leadership in a STEM related discipline, including the skills necessary to work collaboratively with and to lead administrators and faculty involved in undergraduate and graduate education; scholarly and educational excellence consistent with a faculty member holding the rank of full professor with a record as distinguished scholar including a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education including undergraduate research; experience in strategic planning; strong budgeting and implementation skills; experience in national trends and issues impacting STEM education; commitment to student academic and career success; a leadership record of having worked collaboratively in a shared governance environment; experience with accrediting organizations; a commitment to implementing the University's objectives as established in the Strategic Plan.

Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills

Required Years of Experience: 3

Other Requirements:
Tenured at a faculty rank (e.g. full professor) and three years of demonstrated successful progressive administrative experience (e.g., dean, associate dean, department chair, director) in higher education leading undergraduate and graduate programs.

Ph.D. or other doctoral degree in one of the School's disciplines or a related field (e.g. mathematics, chemical sciences, physics, biological sciences, computer science and engineering).

Record of academic accomplishments, including effective teaching, scholarly activity and service at a level consistent with the appointment to rank of Professor with tenure.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience mentoring and supporting faculty and students. Experience with undergraduate and graduate program development, and assessment and accreditation reviews. Effective and collegial work experience with other leaders from a range of academic disciplines.

Strong financial and budgetary experience. Successful experience in securing external funding through grants, cultivating donor relationships and fundraising. Experience with interdisciplinary and cross-school, collaborative program building.

Experience with oversight of academic institutes. Evidence of fostering community engagement and outreach. Awareness of the changing dynamics of national trends in STEM education and the STEM workplace. Commitment to student professional development and career success. Ability to cultivate a strong leadership team comprised of the Dean's Office leadership and staff and department chairs and other leaders in the School.
