Overview of LPS
The College of Liberal and Professional Studies in the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts and Sciences is dedicated to extending learning beyond traditional borders and engages a richly diverse population of intellectually capable students at many points in their lives. LPS programs include professional and academic programs (including study abroad and English language programs for international students and professionals), summer sessions, non-credit programs, workshops, and symposia. LPS programs all have a foundation in the arts and sciences. Each year LPS offers 600 credit courses for undergraduate and graduate, degree and non- degree students as well as non-credit courses focused on areas such as personal enrichment, professional development, and English as a second language.
The Student Success Advisor is responsible for creating and maintaining relationships with Penn LPS Online certificate and course taker students to ensure their success, persistence, retention and goal attainment. The Advisor is responsible for ensuring students' progress successfully through their academic careers.
Job Description
Key activities of this position include welcoming newly admitted students, auditing enrollment data and reaching out to students who may need assistance, connecting with current students on an as needed basis, content development and delivery of student events for the certificate population, managing online new student orientation, and monitoring and approving certificate graduation. Execution of intentional retention outreach communication plans involving phone, email, in person and Zoom meetings. Responding to Freshdesk inquiries. The Advisor helps students navigate Penn and LPS resources and academic policies and connect with other academic and online student services of the University. The Advisor reports to the Director of Non-Degree Programs and works closely with other members of the Penn LPS Online team, Records, Student Services and Enrollment Management teams, and other offices and departments of the University.
Responsibilities
Improve student retention by organizing and delivering activities and communication to support student success and progress through their academic careers, including support of transition to Penn processes. Collaborate with Penn LPS Online team members around strategies for building community among students that will encourage credential completion and achievement of their goals. Manage certificate and course taker New Student Orientation. Collaborates with Penn LPS Online team members and supports students in their acculturation to the online learning environment. Identify obstacles to student retention in the first semester of study and target activities to address those issues.
Advance self-help resources and communication plans to support students in achieving their academic goals in the certificate and course taker programs. Refer students as appropriate to program directors, faculty or academic resources for specific advising issues; liaise with Penn LPS Online colleagues and supervisor on specific student cases. Participate in appropriate interventions for students experiencing difficulty.
Develop and maintain effective, ongoing communication and retention strategies with certificate and course taker students via e-mail, listservs, Zoom, Canvas and phone. Communicate with students regarding routine and non-routine issues (e.g., registration/add/drop deadlines, emergency closings). Solve routine student problems and develop students' ability to help themselves by training them to navigate self-access resources available through Penn LPS Online and through central online university resources.
Participate in student retention group. Deploy proactive communication to encourage re-enrollment. Provide outreach to those in danger of being withdrawn for inactivity; assist inactive students in applying for readmission to LPS. Regularly monitor retention, attrition, and goal completion data. Collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative retention, and student outcomes data. Perform regular academic audits. Manage certificate graduation process in partnership with Records. Work with supervisor to determine and deliver appropriate interventions for students not making sufficient academic progress or not meeting academic requirements. Assist in evaluating effectiveness of retention programs.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 2 years' experience in higher education, counseling or a related field and a minimum of 2 years of experience with student advising in a higher education environment required; Master's degree preferred. Familiarity with academic issues facing working professional students and experience assisting adult students in developing academic plans to meet their future professional goals. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to work well as part of a team. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite required. Application of career development theory preferred along with familiarity with social media, survey software and online delivery of education and support services. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule (evenings; weekends; graduation).
