Research Specialist B or C- Albelda Lab

The research specialist will work in the laboratory of Dr. Steven Albelda as part of a team that is conducting cutting edge cancer immunotherapy research that involves CAR T cells and lipid nanoparticle medicine (the approach used in the COVID vaccines). The applicant will interact with both academic collaborators and with Industry.

The Research Specialist B position includes the following responsibilities: 1) Scientifically supporting the postdoctoral fellows and scientists in the laboratory, 2) Assisting with lab safety, maintaining equipment, helping to maintain shared lab facilities (i.e. tissue culture rooms, freezers) performing various lab maintenance duties, and helping with shipping and receiving of materials. Since the lab focuses on tumor immunotherapy, this individual will assist with specific experiments that use cell culture, flow cytometry, ELISA assays, T cell killing assays, making T cells, and lentiviruses. The applicant would also provide molecular biology support to help make plasmids, lentiviruses, and genetically engineered human and mouse T cells and would assist in mouse experiments involving injection of tumor cells, administering treatments, and monitoring tumor growth.

The Research Specialist C position will undertake roles as described above, including similar aspects to RS-B, with the additional expectation that the researcher has greater laboratory experience in order to develop novel research questions for exploration in line with the Lab's focus. This level researcher will eventually make greater contributions to the lab environment, with opportunities to co-author and share their work in collaborative settings.

Qualifications

Research Specialist B- Experience and general skills required would include a B.A. degree, at least 1-2 years of related experience in research, clinical study, project and people management or equivalent combination of education and experience is required, biological lab experience, proficiency in cell culture, and previous experience in conducting of animal (mouse) studies, with tumor studies preferred. Highly desirable would be proficiency with ELISA, western blot, PCR, cloning and molecular biology, multi-color flow cytometry experience using FlowJo analysis software, and creation of viral vectors. Familiarity with Penn's ordering, biosafety, and IACUC systems would be advantageous.

Research Specialist C- Experience and general skills needed would include a Bachelor's Degree with 3-5 years of related experience in research, clinical study, project and people management or equivalent combination of education and experience is required, biological lab experience, cell culture experience, and previous conduct of animal studies, with tumor studies or Masters degree preferred. Highly desirable would be proficiency with ELISA, western blot, PCR, cloning and molecular biology, multi-color Flow cytometry experience using FlowJo analysis software, and creation of viral vectors. Familiarity with Penn's ordering, biosafety, and IACUC systems would be advantageous.
