Job Description Summary
Research Specialist D- Albelda Lab
The research specialist will work in the laboratory of Dr. Steven Albelda as part of a team that is conducting cutting edge cancer immunotherapy research that involves CAR T cells and lipid nanoparticle medicine (the approach used in the COVID vaccines). The applicant will act as a lab manager as well as conducting supportive and independent research. They will interact with both academic collaborators and with Industry.

Position contingent upon funding.

The position includes four key responsibilities:

1) assuming the responsibilities of lab manager - this includes interacting with Penn regulatory agencies (such as the ERS) and administration of the Lung Biology Institute, being responsible for lab safety, ordering lab supplies, maintaining all equipment, ensuring supplies of carbon dioxide and liquid nitrogen, maintaining all shared lab facilities (ie. tissue culture rooms, freezers) organizing and maintaining a frozen cell bank, performing or assigning various lab maintenance duties, supervising shipping and receiving of materials, and on-boarding of new lab members.

2) Scientifically supporting the postdoctoral fellows and scientists in the laboratory - this includes assisting with specific experiments such as advanced flow cytometry, ELISA assays, T cell killing assays, imaging, animal experiments, cell culture, making T cells and lentiviruses. They would also provide molecular biology support to help generate novel molecular constructs (such as chimeric antigen receptors) or generate cell lines using viral, plasmid or CRISPR techniques.

3) Supervising and training research specialists/technicians . The applicant will likely be directly supervising one or more research specialists/technicians. They will also be responsible to for training new lab members on techniques and safety issues.

4) Taking on specific projects as lead scientist - with only the supervision of the Principal Investigator, this individual will be capable of taking on a specific new project. This will involve experimental design, conduct of the studies, trouble-shooting, and writing a draft of a manuscript.

Specific Research skills needed include:

-cell culture, ELISA, western blot, PCR, cloning and molecular biology expertise

Preferred skills include:

-Creation of chimeric antigen receptors or transgenic T cell receptors using standard molecular biology techniques

-Creation of lentiviral vectors

-Expansion and generation of both human and mouse CAR T cells, both virally transduced and mRNA transduced.

-Multi-color Flow cytometry to assess T cell phenotypes- high level skill in using FloJo analysis software

-Conduct of animal studies

Prior supervisory experience

Qualifications Master's Degree with 3-5 years of related experience in research, clinical study, project and people management or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. At least 10 years of biological lab experience, lab management experience is preferred.

Familiarity with Penn's ordering, biosafety, and IACUC systems preferred.
