Assistant Vice Chancellor-Global Initiatives

Assistant Vice Chancellor-Global Initiatives

At the University of California San Diego, a commitment to innovation and taking the path less traveled are guiding principles. Since its founding in 1960 as a forward-thinking institution for graduate and undergraduate study, UC San Diego has grown to become one of the most prominent research universities in the world and possesses a culture of collaboration that sparks discoveries that advance society and drive economic impact. UC San Diego now invites inquiries, nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Vice Chancellor-Global Initiatives (AVC-GI).

Located near the Pacific Ocean on approximately 1,200 acres of coastal woodland in La Jolla, California, UC San Diego is an inherently global university. Its faculty, researchers and students perform and study the most important global, scientific and societal issues of our times. The University's main campus encompasses eight undergraduate colleges, six academic schools and six graduate and professional schools. U.S. News & World Report recognized UC San Diego as one of the top 10 public universities. Washington Monthly ranked it as the sixth best public university in the nation for contributions to social mobility, research and public service. In FY 2021, UC San Diego earned $1.54 billion in sponsored research funding and had revenues of more than $6.1 billion, making the institution an academic powerhouse and economic engine. It is a campus committed to ensuring a dynamic ecosystem for international collaborations. How it educates and supports the next generation of global changemakers and expands its global research at a time of increasingly complex global issues are of critical importance for UC San Diego.

The founders of UC San Diego had one criterion for the campus: it must be distinctive. In 2019, UC San Diego participated in the American Council on Education (ACE) Internationalization Lab. The result was a roadmap for how the institution could take bold action that would position it to help redefine international engagement for higher education in the post-pandemic era. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and working in close consultation with the Vice Chancellor for Research, the AVC-GI will be asked to develop a strategy to implement the report recommendations and facilitate the transformation of internationalization for UC San Diego that will include providing support for faculty and scholars as frontline champions for internationalization; breaking silos and building bridges; creating a culture of global citizenship; crafting a community of lifelong Tritons; and providing leadership to the division of Global Initiatives.

The ideal candidate will be an innovative, dynamic and entrepreneurial individual who has the ability to develop and implement a comprehensive internationalization strategy to expand UC San Diego’s brand recognition and reach in research and academics on the global stage. A demonstrated record of successful global engagement initiatives for research and education across multiple disciplines and regions; ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of campus stakeholders; skill in engaging and developing international and cultural partnerships; and a commitment to fostering global perspectives among students and faculty will be essential for success. Additionally, the AVC-GI will possess global competence, through life experience, linguistic capabilities and/or living abroad, as well as a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
