Job Description Summary
The Immune Health Initiative at Penn seeks a highly motivated, dedicated, and detail-oriented Resource Technologist to coordinate clinical and translational research projects and assist in processing human biospecimens procured from these studies.

Job Description

Clinical coordination, documentation, and data management
  • Daily coordination of multiple clinical trials and investigator-initiated research. Close communication with clinicians, investigators, clinical research coordinators, and the processing team is essential to perform this responsibility. The Resource Technologist will be an integral player by being the center of coordination and execution of all moving parts of the team and will play a pivotal role in successful development and establishment of a central hub for curating clinical care of Immune Health patients through translational research.
  • Coordinate, organize, complete, and maintain all study documentation, including any essential and/or regulatory study documents. Enter clinical sample processing records into appropriate electronic data capture systems. Write and regularly revise SOPs.
  • Maintain daily spreadsheets to assure accurate and complete records of patient databases.
  • Assist in external shipment/transfer of blood, urine, and tissue biospecimens.
  • Maintain sample schedule and coordinate with team/personnel calendar to organize biospecimen processing and external scientific experiment schedules.
  • May assist in managing the team's social media accounts and research websites.


Sample acquisition, tracking, storage, and organization
  • Process human biospecimens, including blood and tissue, for a variety of clinical trials being conducted throughout the Penn community, including COVID-19 and COVID-19 vaccines.
  • Ability to follow established standard procedures, attention to detail, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability and eagerness to work in a team setting.
  • Work closely with Immune Health Processing Unit manager to triage/prioritize sample allocation. Candidate can demonstrate independent judgement in technique and method selection, protocol design and execution, data analysis and use of standard operating procedures for a variety of problems of moderate scope and complexity to meet assigned objectives.
  • Previous experience processing human biospecimens and working in a sterile laboratory environment is highly desired and candidate should possess strong analytical, problem-solving, and process improvement skills.
  • Help with organization, management, and storage of processed clinical samples using the LabVantage (LIMS) system.
  • Pick up and/or deliver clinical samples at various locations on UPenn's medical campus.


Support in immunological assay execution and development
  • Prepare samples for high-dimensional phenotypic and functional analysis of single cells using flow cytometry/CyTOF.
  • Perform other routine laboratory tasks including, but not limited to CBC, media preparation, inventory management, and scheduled equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to develop, learn, and execute new assays as necessary.


Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in biology, biochemistry, or related field with 3-5 year(s) of related experience in handling and processing human biospecimens, including blood and tissue, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Position contingent upon funding.

Effective problem-solving abilities; detail-oriented; effective communication and writing skills; strong organizational and time management skills; flexible and able to multi-task; demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently. Knowledge of IRB and human research protection regulations is a bonus. Should be proficient in Microsoft Windows and databases such as REDCap and LabVantage
