The Search

The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Health Professions welcomes applications and nominations for Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs. With a campus community of over 22,000 students and 3,000 faculty, UAB is one of the nation’s premier research universities and an exceptional place to work. UAB includes one of the nation’s largest academic health science centers and the third largest public hospital. The university is ranked 15th in the nation among public universities and 31st overall in federally funded research expenditures. The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Health Professions is one of the largest and most well-respected health professions schools in the nation. The school offers over 30 programs in the fields of clinical and diagnostic sciences, health services administration, nutrition sciences, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and rehabilitation science. Its programs are highly rated with its Master’s in Health Administration program cited as number one in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. The school also houses several centers and institutes, including Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC), Diabetes Research Center (DRC), and Center of Excellence in Disability Health and Rehabilitation Science (CEDHARS). The school’s faculty have more NIH funding than any other school of its type in the country and, in 2021, the school’s total research funding was over $20 million. The school is the fastest growing at UAB with plans to continue thoughtful expansion and designed growth over the next five years.

The next Associate Dean is a key senior leader at SHP and will oversee current and new academic programs, faculty development, accreditation, and student services. The school seeks for this role a forward-thinking researcher, scholar, and administrator who will work with colleagues to advance excellence in academic programs, an exceptional student experience and outcomes, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree from an accredited institution relevant to one of SHP’s departments, along with a record of teaching, research and scholarship, and service commensurate with a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of professor in SHP. Experience mentoring and supporting faculty, a record of program curriculum development, knowledge of accreditation processes, and an appreciation of the tenure and/or promotion and post-tenure review process are needed.
