Vice President for Communications, Marketing and External Relations

The Vice President for Communications, Marketing and External Relations leads the university's communications, brand management and marketing efforts; provides strategic leadership to KU's 21-sport NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletic program and sports medicine department, camps and conference services, Pennsylvania German Culture Heritage Center and KU Presents! The position reports directly to the university president and serves on the President's Cabinet.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field. 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in communications, marketing and external affairs, with experience in managing camps, conferences, cultural entities, and athletics.
  • Five years in management at an upper or executive level in a complex organization.
  • Demonstrated track record in brand development and management. Substantial experience in web-based marketing and social media.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and implement successful, large-scale marketing campaigns, lead integrated marketing communications, and build effective media relations.
  • Proven record of people and project management with strong leadership, communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Significant experience in budget development and management
  • Candidate must be a creative, strategic thinker with excellent planning and analytical abilities and demonstrated administrative, leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with crisis communication and serving as institutional spokesperson in a wide variety of situations required
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, to many kinds of audiences, including the media
  • Experience writing speeches and/or supervising this function
  • Candidate will have worked closely with an organization's top executives and have successfully managed freelancers and consultants
  • Robust understanding of key issues in higher education and ability to work successfully in a university setting.

Preferred Qualifications:
Community and/or government relations experience. Athletics management experience. Experience of having worked an institution of higher learning in a leadership position.
