Assistant Professor - Philosophy and Religion (Religion)

Summary of Position

The Department of Philosophy and Religion at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington (UNCW) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in American religions or Religion and Politics or Public Policy, effective August 2018. Possible areas of specialization may include: African-American or Islam; Native American or minority religions, religion race and public policy; religion and international politics.  

A Ph.D. in the academic study of religion is preferred. The successful candidate should be a strong teacher-scholar who demonstrates excellence in teaching religious studies at the undergraduate level. The department has a record of research excellence, and in keeping with this tradition, we seek a candidate with strong research skills and potential. Teaching responsibilities will include 100-level courses in Religious Studies as well as upper-division- courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise.

The Philosophy and Religion Department seeks to foster philosophy and the study of religions and to encourage a critical appreciation of the deepest issues of human experience of the past and present, in our own culture and globally. It plays a vital role in the University’s mission to embrace global diversity and critical thinking. Founded in 1963, the department has grown from three faculty members to include sixteen full-time faculty. We train students to think critically about contemporary issues and problems.

Minimum Requirements

Ph.D. in Religious Studies, American Religious History, or Religion and Politics or Religion and Public Policy. A.B.D.s will be considered, however doctorate must be received within the first academic year of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in Religious Studies focused on American Religions and subspecialties in Islamic Studies.
