Job Description Summary
The Head Athletic Trainer will develop, coordinate and administer a comprehensive sports medical program for intercollegiate sports in conjunction with Penn Sports Medicine Team physicians. The head athletic trainer will also perform professional and administrative services essential for the successful implementation and development of the program.This position oversees the Holistic Wellness and Concussion Center and is responsible for overseeing the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and related illnesses for all student-athletes while also coordinating with health care services for athletes with Student Health. Trains and supervises a staff of full-time and part-time trainers. The head athletic trainer receives general supervision and reports to the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Intercollegiate Programs.

Job Description


The Head Athletic Trainer is responsible for overseeing the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and related illnesses for all student athletes on 33 intercollegiate teams.Trains and supervises a staff of full-time and part-time trainers. Coordinates health care services for student-athletes with Student Health and team physician. Receives general supervision and reports to the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Intercollegiate Programs. The Head Athletic Trainer will have the following responsibilities including but not limited to:
  • Responsible for the oversight of the athletic training staff, including hiring, training and supervision of assistant/associate athletic trainers and student athletic trainers. Schedule both home, away, and practice dates. Oversee the FT nutritionist and sport psychologist. Manage professional development, continuing education, and certifications for staff including the organization of the annual Penn sports performance conference.
  • Manage the Holistic Wellness and Concussion Center. Develop and oversee sports medicine program in consultation with Penn Sports Medicine, including: injury prevention programs, injury evaluations, management, treatment and rehabilitation, educational programs.
  • Coordinate athletic training and health care services for athletes with sports med, student health, strength & conditioning staff and other services for student-athletes to determine their ability to practice and compete and to customize plans to meet individual needs.
  • Communication with coaching staff, administration, and other university departments for coverage, injuries, and advice as well as with Ivy League peers. Serve as the liaison for athletic research being conducted on Penn athletes.
  • Assist in the development of the sports medical program budget. Maintain supplies and equipment inventory.
  • Compliance with all Ivy league, NCAA, HIPPA rules, regulations, and compliance issues. Assume control of coordinated record keeping including eligibility documents, ongoing care logs, and other necessary information. This includes overseeing the comprehensive pre-participation screening process for incoming student-athletes.


A Bachelor's Degree and NATA certification required plus 5-7 years of experience as a certified athletic trainer in a college or university environment or equivalent combination of education and experience. Technical proficiency with electronic database record-keeping preferred. Experience with staff supervision and program management. Candidate must have strong interpersonal, time management, and communication skills. Ability to work nights,weekends, and travel with team as schedule dictates. Valid drivers license required.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master's degree plus 2-3 years of experience preferred.
