The Opportunity

Boston University (BU) seeks a dynamic and collaborative leader to serve as the next Vice President, Auxiliary Services (VP).

Boston University (BU) is a private research university located in Boston, Massachusetts.  The University has more than 3,900 faculty members and approximately 33,000 undergraduate and graduate students and is one of Boston’s largest employers.  BU offers bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and doctorates, and medical, dental, business, and law degrees through 17 schools and colleges on two urban campuses. The main campus is situated along the Charles River in Boston’s Back Bay, Fenway-Kenmore and Allston neighborhoods, while the Boston University Medical Campus is in Boston’s South End neighborhood. 

Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Operations, the Vice President, Auxiliary Services is the highest-ranking manager within Auxiliary Services. The VP provides leadership, direction, and oversight of a diverse and complex group of revenue‐generating enterprises that directly support student life and academic activities, emphasizing excellent customer service while optimizing topline revenue and operating margin contributions. The VP is responsible for coordinating budget development and monitoring revenue and expense activity; dashboard reporting; policy development and implementation; business planning; diversity initiatives; capital investment planning; project management; and process improvement efforts.  The supervised departments employ over 1,000 full- and part-time employees, with annual revenue of approximately $300 million.  Auxiliary Services is also one of the largest student employers on the Charles River Campus.

The successful candidate will have more than 10-years of experience in directly managing large, complex, high-volume auxiliary enterprises in higher education or industry with demonstrated successful outcomes. The candidate will have a successful track record in negotiating and managing multimillion-dollar housing, dining, vending, pouring rights, and retail contracts.  The successful candidate will possess an expert understanding of a variety of business models; an understanding of decentralized budget and financial systems that are associated with each enterprise; extensive knowledge of key performance indicators; the ability to promote excellent interpersonal relationships; experience briefing senior leadership, media, students, and the academic community; and strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills. A bachelor’s degree is required, an advanced degree in a relevant field is preferred.
