Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Associate Director manages and leads on research and internship programming, including the Penn Global Research Institutes (PGRI) and the Global Research and Internship Program (GRIP). This position works closely with partners on campus, and abroad including employers, providers and other relevant industry partners, to ensure a seamless, safe, and enriching experiential learning opportunity for Penn students. The position supervises two full time staff.

The position provides oversight of the strategic advising and enrollment management of research and internship programs in collaboration with the Executive Director, and relevant team members. Compliance and governance of research and internship policies and procedures are managed by the Associate Director who will also manage the day-to-day operations of the program including the coordination of program duties and tasks to other staff members involved in the program. The position will supervise the Global Programs Manager and Global Programs Coordinator positions which are dedicated to the management of the GRIP and PGRI programs. The Associate Director carries out a mix of program management, programming and crisis support as follows:

Program Management: Work closely with the Global Programs Manager and Global Programs Coordinator in preparing and updating information and materials for programs within Terra Dotta; application review and student selection; and maintain partnerships with providers, host institutions, and program-related staff and contacts abroad.

Programming, Outreach, and Recruitment: Lead Penn Abroad initiatives for programming in extra-curricular programming, including developing outreach initiatives with the Global Programs Manager, Global Programs Coordinator, and Senior Manager, Marketing and Outreach to prospective education abroad students and faculty; activities include but are not limited to Penn Global Week, the Study Abroad Fair, information sessions, returned student programming, social media, marketing support, events, etc.

Crisis Support: Collaborating with appropriate crisis response team members in the case of student emergencies abroad.

Job Description


The Associate Director will be responsible for:
  • Primarily manage the Global Research and Internship Program (GRIP) and Penn Global Research Institutes (PGRI) in close collaboration with the Penn Abroad and Penn Global leadership teams, including oversight of planning, programming, and guiding the work of the Global Programs Manager and Global Programs Coordinator who report to this position.
  • Lead the student application and enrollment processes for all GRIP and PGRI opportunities, including systems management and the integration of information in Penn Global systems and websites, leading the work of staff dedicated to internships and research programming.
  • Oversee the full internship and research proposal and placement processes, including but not limited to managing faculty recruitment for PGRI, and internship and research placement strategies for GRIP.
  • Lead on all internship and research reporting and analytics, including the monitoring and analyzing of GRIP and PGRI placements at each stage of the program, providing regular reports and updates to Penn Abroad and Penn Global leadership.
  • Manage ongoing stewardship of faculty/departmental relationships, and stewardship of external funding providers, in close collaboration with the Executive Director.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


A Bachelor's degree is required, along with three to five years' experience in education abroad advising and program management, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated experience in program leadership and growth; ability to identify and deliver on strategic program priorities; strong leadership and strategic planning skills. Experience with developing, building, and managing employer relationships; understanding of the internship and employment landscape for students, and understanding of the nuances of managing relationships with external supervisors and providers. Knowledge of research programming, particularly at undergraduate level. Experience working with faculty stakeholders, particularly on research projects and programs.

Understanding of the student research environment, including best practices, student support resources, avenues for student publication and presentation, and distinct skills required for successfully navigating the research environment. Experience managing funding and multiple funding sources, including work with grants, foundations, and stewardship initiatives. Excellent judgment and ability to deal with difficult situations.

Commitment to the Penn Abroad Team Values . A willingness to travel and represent the University of Pennsylvania's views, standards, and policies with authority and personal conviction; interest in professional development; and familiarity with computer applications for a global education office.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree preferred but not required.
