Job Description Summary
The Penn Libraries' Biotech Commons seeks a talented and creative full-time digital fabrication lab operator who can work directly with Penn users and operate equipment to support the fabrication of objects and parts. This is a great one-year position to start a 3D printing career in a state-of-the-art fabrication facility and learn from seasoned experts in a supportive environment.

The operator will also assist with the inventories of materials, will have an instrumental role in creating workflows for processing fabrication requests, and will assist researchers with simple evaluations of CAD files. Candidates must have previous experience in running commercial or consumer level 3D printers.

Job Description

  • Operate fabrication machinery including, but not limited to, 3D Printers, laser cutter, and 3d scanners
  • Process fabrication requests including reviewing files, validating print ability, and communicating with patrons
  • Read CAD drawings or 3D model assemblies directly in CAD applications; manipulate models to obtain assembly intent, dimensions, and part quantities
  • Manage print queues and material changes in anticipation of requests and print schedule.
  • Inspect 3D printer parts for print quality and print errors
  • Post processing of 3D printed parts to remove support structure and clean parts per the requirements of the researcher or staff
  • Manage the inventory levels of all 3D printer materials, confirm stock availability with vendors, and re-order as necessary to ensure there is no down time of 3D printers
  • Contribute to creating workflows for processing fabrication requests
  • Train student workers and interns as needed to operate equipment and process patron requests
  • Track printer usage of all print jobs and prepare utilization summaries for administrative staff


    High school diploma or equivalent. One year of experience with any 3D Printer

    Additional Qualifications:

    Technical degree. 2+ years experience in operating and maintaining at least two of the following types of commercial or consumer level 3D printers:
    • (Stereolithography (SLA), Digital Light Processing (DLP), Fused deposition modeling (FDM), polyjet, selective laser sintering (SLS), Powder/binder-based, etc.)
    • Related experience with the repair and maintenance of 3D printers using vendor service contracts
    • Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented documentation skills to track 3D printer usage
    • Familiarity with any CAD package and ability to read CAD drawings and assemblies

    This position includes the manipulation of 3D printed parts and the inventory of materials to support 3D printed materials. Candidates must be able to carry out physical requirements of lifting and carrying up to 30lbs, loading and unloading 3D printer trays, as well as clean 3D printed parts. Working knowledge of Word and Excel. Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team. Ability to work well with others and without supervision. Preferred machine shop skills
