Job Description Summary
We are seeking a full time Research Specialist to join the Translational Spine and Joint Research Laboratory in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. The successful applicant will contribute to multidisciplinary research projects, including those focused on developing minimally-invasive therapeutics for low back pain, and novel treatments for children with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS). A unique strength of our laboratory's research program is that it spans from basic, mechanistic studies, right through to preclinical studies in animal models and clinical studies in human patients. The position will include the opportunity to participate in the vibrant scientific life of Penn's world-renowned Orthopaedic Surgery department, which was recently named number one for NIH funding.

Job Description

We are seeking a full time Research Specialist to join the Translational Spine and Joint Research Laboratory in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. The successful applicant will contribute to multidisciplinary research projects, including those focused on developing minimally-invasive therapeutics for low back pain, and novel treatments for children with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS). A unique strength of our laboratory's research program is that it spans from basic, mechanistic studies, right through to preclinical studies in animal models and clinical studies in human patients. Duties will include contributing to laboratory research, encompassing techniques that include working with small and large animal models, cell culture, RNA and protein assays, drug delivery, histology, imaging and biomechanical testing. Previous experience in musculoskeletal research would be highly regarded.

Duties will also include coordination of clinical studies with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, including management of biospecimens, and as such familiarity with human subjects research will be highly regarded. The successful candidate will also be responsible for overall lab management, including overseeing lab safety, training and inventory. Additionally, the ideal candidate will be an excellent verbal and written communicator; have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team; and be willing to learn new skills.

The Research Specialist C will be required to carry out higher level responsibilities, including conducting independent research with minimal supervision, assisting with grant and manuscript preparation, conducting literature searches, and supervising more junior staff members and students.

The position will include the opportunity to co-author peer-reviewed manuscripts and participate in the vibrant scientific life of Penn's world-renowned Orthopaedic Surgery department, which was recently named number one for NIH funding.

Qualifications

Research Specialist B - Bachelor's Degree in biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, biotechnology or a related field and 1-3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Research Specialist C-Bachelor's Degree in biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, biotechnology or a related field and 3-5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Master's degree preferred.

Experience in several of the following areas is required: working with in vivo animal models including mouse colony maintenance (breeding, genotyping and euthanasia); cell culture; RNA and protein assays (e.g. qPCR and ELISAs); histology and immunohistochemistry; imaging (e.g. microscopy, microCT, MRI and ultrasound); and soft tissue biomechanics. Competence with PC computers and familiarity with statistical software is required. Previous experience in musculoskeletal research is preferred. Familiarity with human subjects research and experience managing human biospecimens is preferred. Lab management experience, including taking inventory; ordering supplies; maintaining equipment; and maintaining general cleanliness and safety within laboratory areas is preferred.

It is important that the candidate possesses an eagerness to learn new scientific ideas and methods, is able to conduct a literature review to assist in determining suitable methodology, can work well as part of a team, and is able to precisely follow instructions. Successful candidates must be detail oriented, self-motivated, and have excellent organization and communication (written and oral) skills. They must also possess the ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks, work independently, use good judgment, and monitor completion of assigned tasks. For the Research Specialist C, in addition to the above, applicants should have experience independently conducting complex research projects, ideally evidenced by authorship of peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts. Experience supervising and training laboratory technicians and students is required. Experience preparing and revising animal research protocols is preferred. Experience preparing manuscripts, grants and Powerpoint presentations is preferred.
