Job Description Summary
The Senior IT Support Specialist in the School of Arts and Sciences will help faculty and staff to make effective use of technology in all aspects of their research and teaching roles in mixed Mac/PC/Linux environments. This position will maintain secure, reliable systems and help further program goals through creative use of information technology. They will diagnose and resolve complex technical problems with computing hardware, software, and network services. They will also work with various clients across the school to maintain specialized infrastructures such as Freezer Monitoring Technology, NMR Spectrometers, FMP Databases, and aiding in the design, development, and maintenance of new technological components of faculty research projects.

DUTIES:

Penn's School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) is world-renowned for exceptional faculty, innovative research, and top-tier degree programs. SAS Computing is seeking a Senior Information Technology Support Specialist to provide excellent technological support and creative IT solutions that will further the research and teaching missions of the school. The successful candidate will listen well to the needs of clients, and propose innovative and maintainable methods of accomplishing those goals. They are capable of providing expert-level support to VIP clients with a wide variety of technical abilities and comfort levels from novice to expert. The ideal candidate is comfortable in a busy and highly collaborative environment, and provides clear and frequent communication, guidance, and IT leadership to both colleagues and clients. As a member of the School of Arts & Sciences Computing group, the Senior IT Support Specialist will assure that all activities are consistent with institutional standards and will participate in School-wide technology initiatives.

One of the primary responsibilities of the position involves helping create and implement technological solutions for faculty research projects, including recommending and supporting specialized hardware and software in mixed Mac/PC/Linux environments. The Senior IT Support Specialist will also join the Natural Sciences support teams in providing walk-in, telephone, and e-mail support for faculty, staff, and students, answering questions and troubleshooting problems. Expert judgment in developing effective and resilient procedures and processes that can be used effectively by colleagues is highly desirable. Experience with environmental control and scientific instrumentation computing is preferred and good working knowledge of PC and Mac hardware will be necessary. Experience with BigFix or similar endpoint management software is highly desirable. A strong commitment to information security is required; experience with encryption and remote solutions is desirable. Commitment to development of documentation in line with the best practices of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility is also required. A key responsibility of this position is working with VIP faculty and staff in high-demand labs and facilities to identify creative IT solutions that forward the research, teaching, and administration of the Natural Sciences departments. This position is Hybrid Eligible.

QUALIFICATIONS:

BA/BS and 2 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Experience supporting Linux, Mac OS and Windows is required. Familiarity with basic desktop hardware and maintenance required. Familiarity with popular web browsers and mail applications, basic computer networking concepts, and anti-virus software required. Familiarity with usage of Active Directory and FileMaker desirable.

Experience with encryption desirable. Excellent customer service and spoken/written communication skills required; flexible work schedule may be required occasionally.
