Utah State University (USU) invites nominations and applications for a significant academic leadership position as Dean of the College of Engineering.

Utah State University is a Carnegie-classified doctoral high research institution and Utah's land grant and space-grant University. Founded in 1888, USU is the first and largest public residential campus in Utah.  Total enrollment is approximately 28,000 with approximately 18,000 of those students located at the Logan campus. The remaining students attend through one of the university’s four regional campuses, fifteen teaching centers, internationally based programs, and/or online programs. During the past fiscal year, USU set an institutional record in research funding of over $220 million.

USU’s College of Engineering is comprised of innovative, passionate, and committed faculty who are actively engaged in exciting advances in research and preparing tomorrow’s leaders to solve problems in engineering, engineering education, and computer science. The college serves approximately 2,600 undergraduate and 400 graduate students across six academic departments (Biological Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Engineering Education, and Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering) and is home to eight research centers, including the world-renowned Utah Water Research Lab. Six college programs are accredited by ABET and one is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. The college employs a growing faculty of 84 tenured and tenure-track faculty, seven-research faculty, and 10 teaching faculty.

In 2017, highly competitive engineering faculty secured $18.2 million in research funding from top agencies. Since 2016, three junior engineering faculty received NSF CAREER awards and another was named an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator in 2015. College faculty and students are actively engaged with USU’s Innovation Campus, a business development and enterprise facility, and USU’s industry-leading Space Dynamics Laboratory. USU engineering students thrive in outreach programs such as Engineers without Borders, Society of Women Engineers, and Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. In addition, they excel in design competitions such as the Air Force Research Laboratory Challenge, Human Powered Vehicle Challenge, and the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Competition.

As chief academic officer for the College of Engineering, the dean will report directly to the executive vice president and provost. In addition to a strong academic background and credentials sufficient for appointment to the rank of full professor, the successful candidate will:

  • Articulate a clear vision for the future direction of the college,

  • Exhibit passion and the ability to inspire achievement in others,

  • Advance and support alumni relations, development, advancement, and fund-raising efforts,

  • Demonstrate understanding of and commitment to the university’s land and space- grant missions, and

  • Build strong working partnerships within the university and with key government and industry partners.

The dean will provide administrative and academic leadership for faculty, staff, and students; strategically facilitate growth of innovative research, excellent teaching, and supportive infrastructure; and effectively represent the needs and shared vision of the college.

The position is available July 1, 2018. Application review will begin December 1, 2017 and will continue until the position is filled.
