Position Summary:

The Department of Geography and City & Regional Planning is accepting applications for a tenure-track position in Human Geography. The successful candidate will teach geography courses as well as high enrollment general education courses. Some of the geography courses the candidate will teach include cultural geography, urban geography, historical geography of the US, political geography, world crisis, American ethnic geography, geography of world economy, and the American west. The candidate may be called upon to teach in a distance or service learning education mode and will be encouraged to develop web-enhanced and/or web- based instruction. The candidate will perform outcome assessment for courses. Additional responsibilities of the candidate include research, publication, and other scholarly activities, as well as advising students and engaging in service at all levels of the university.

Overview:

The Department of Geography and City & Regional Planning is a student-centered department and one of nine departments and programs in the College of Social Sciences. The department offers a BA degree in Geography, a BS degree in City and Regional Planning, a minor in Meteorology, a minor in Interdisciplinary Urban Studies, an option in City and Regional Planning, and an online Certificate of Advanced Study in Community and Regional Planning. The course offerings support undergraduate training for careers in environmental study, teaching, weather, regional and urban planning, and preparation for graduate work. The department boasts as the most internationally diverse faculty in the university and takes pride in its scholarly excellence. Faculty research is supported by state of the art facilities in two of its laboratories: Environmental Research and GIS/Remote Sensing laboratories. There is opportunity for students to work with faculty on their research projects and take part in department led study abroad projects.

Required Education:

Ph.D. in Geography or a related field from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required. Candidates nearing the completion of the doctorate (ABD) will be considered; however, for continued employment the doctorate must be completed by 7/31/2018.

Required Experience:

Applicant must be able to demonstrate:

  1. A commitment to teaching excellence in human geography at the undergraduate level, which may be demonstrated through prior teaching experience and teaching evaluations or other evidence.
  2. A strong foundation of a career-long research agenda in geography as evidenced for example by one or more academic conference paper presentations or peer-reviewed publications.
  3. A commitment to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Evidence of having successfully taught one or more university-level human geography courses as soleinstructor.
