Assistant or Associate/Full Professor In Design

The Design Lab at UC San Diego (http://designlab.ucsd.edu), in collaboration with the Jacobs School of Engineering, Division of Social Sciences, and School of Medicine, seeks candidates for tenure, tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank. The Design Lab at UC San Diego is a new initiative, established by the Chancellor to become a major international center for human-centered design, with the focus upon design as a way of thinking, especially dealing with a people-centered approach to complex sociotechnical systems.


The Design Lab works with all departments and divisions of the University. This ad welcomes faculty working on innovative people-centered design. This recruitment is for an appointment in one of five host departments in the Jacobs School of Engineering – Bioengineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Structural Engineering; or one of three host departments in the Division of Social Sciences -- Anthropology, Cognitive Science, Education Studies; or the Medical School's Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health. 

For Candidates at the Assistant Level
A terminal degree (or advancement to candidacy) such as a PhD, MD, MFA, MDes, or equivalent in their area of expertise at the time of appointment is required (see individual application links below for additional details).  Candidates must provide evidence of experience in teaching (examples may include presenting at conferences, teaching of courses, teaching assistant experience, mentoring at any level, assertions of competency by letter writers, etc.), research, and service.  

Preferred candidates will have published human-centered research in conference and/or journal articles in highly-regarded peer-reviewed venues, have one or more years of experience supervising and teaching graduate and undergraduate students in design-related courses; have evidence of professional activity related to the individual's field of study, as well as evidence of contributing to a campus climate that supports equity, inclusion, and diversity.

For Candidates at the Associate/Full Level:

Candidates must have completed a terminal degree--such as a PhD, MD or equivalent doctoral degree, have three years of teaching, service, and research experience. Candidates must have published human-centered research in conference and/or journal articles in highly-regarded peer-reviewed venues and a demonstrated vigorous program of high-quality funded design and engineering research.

Preferred candidates will have demonstrated independence in the area of human-centered research as evidenced through the candidate's publication record, reflected by their original working being published in highly regarded conferences and/or journals or other academic venues; and also evidenced by their ability to attract funding as a PI from relevant funding agencies; demonstrated teaching excellence as they will be expected to supervise and teach graduate and undergraduate students in design-related courses; demonstrated the highest standards of professional activity, as evidenced by invited talks, contributions to scientific publications as an expert reviewer, peer awards, and other relevant accomplishments in the field; and evidence of contributions to a campus climate that supports equity, inclusion, and diversity.

An interdisciplinary perspective and experience with multiple methodologies is highly valued. Candidates with experience with or willingness to engage in activities that contribute to diversity and inclusion are especially encouraged to apply.


The successful applicant will be expected to establish a vigorous program of high-quality funded design and behavioral research. We are open to many diverse applications of human-centered design to the candidate department. Potential engineering domains for human-centered design research include: imaging and sensors, real-world usage in health & other domains, human-robot interaction, cyperphysical systems, medical devices, design tools for mass customization, human-computer interaction, visualization, crowdsourcing, social computing, and engineering systems & operations. Potential Social or Health Sciences focused domains for human-centered design research include: urban planning, transportation, global health, climate change, cultural heritage, human-robot interaction, data science & visualization, cognition & culture, equity & sustainability, embodied interaction, online learning, crowdsourcing, lifelong learning, informal learning, medical care in resource-limited settings, infectious diseases, and mobile health. Other relevant areas are welcomed.

Appointments will begin July 1, 2018 and salary is commensurate with experience and based on the University of California pay scales.
