Job Description Summary
We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced candidate for a Research Specialist. The candidate would be involved in various projects in neurotrauma research and would primarily be responsible for husbandry, surgery, anesthesia/analgesia, monitoring, behavior/neurological assessment, administering care, and collecting samples and other data from large animals (pigs).

Job Description

We utilize a swine model that can uniquely recreate the mechanisms (impulse loading via rotational acceleration of the head) and manifestations (e.g., prolonged loss of consciousness) of human TBI. A critical component of this research effort involves the swine neurointensive care unit (neuroICU) to enable clinically relevant study of neurocritical care and to extend studies of moderate-to-severe TBI into the rehabilitation phase. This swine neuroICU supports projects ranging from sponsored research agreements for neuromonitoring device development to investigations of the role of reticular activating system pathology in recovery from moderate-to-severe TBI with coma, and many in between.

We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced candidate for a Research Specialist. The candidate would be involved in various projects in neurotrauma research and would primarily be responsible for husbandry, surgery, anesthesia/analgesia, monitoring, behavior/neurological assessment, administering care, and collecting samples and other data from large animals (pigs).

The ideal candidate would have a Bachelor's degree and 1-3 years of experience from a relevant field and previous experience working with pigs, as well as more general veterinary or neuroscience research experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required. As primary responsibilities will revolve around pig handling, the candidate must have experience handling pigs, be dedicated to the humane treatment of lab animals, and be capable of frequent lifting (occasionally up to 50 lbs) as well as frequent standing, walking, intermittently stooping, crouching, and bending. Once trained by senior lab members, the candidate will be expected to independently complete various tasks, such as swine handling, treatment administration, behavior, and various data/sample collection tasks. Additionally, the candidate will assist with figure and manuscript preparation, and will have various lab administrative responsibilities. Duty hours will be flexible to meet the demands of individual studies, sometimes requiring overnight animal monitoring.
