Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Development and Alumni Relations, the Senior Associate Director for Strategic Communications will serve as SP2's staff member dedicated to creating and managing the School's marketing strategy. The Officers primary role will be to promote and solidify SP2 s position as a recognized and influential leader in higher education and social policy and practice across multiple audiences including, but not limited to, potential and current students; alumni; donors; and Deans, Directors and Faculty of all other Social Work and Social Policy Schools. The Officer will help to create and execute a proactive short and long-term communications strategy to heighten and enhance SP2 s presence among Penn s internal and external communities. This officer will design and implement strategies across multiple communications platforms including social media, web, and print. Leading a staff writer with shared supervision of a stewardship officer - the individual in this role will support their professional development by setting clear performance expectations and holding them accountable for outcomes through frequent feedback and coaching.

Job Description

Manage a staff writer and share supervision of an assistant director of stewardship and development communications. Lead them to achieve optimum results by reviewing/editing documents written by the staff writer for publication on the website, internal newsletters, press releases/media alerts, briefings, position statements, talking points, marketing collateral, etc. and by reviewing the assistant director of stewardship's projects such as donor reports, foundation proposals, and plans for donor events featuring the dean. Direct consultants on an ad hoc basis in preparation of flyers, logos, presentations, etc. Approve final language for articles, newsletters, dean's talking points, acknowledgement letters, etc.

In collaboration with Assoc. Dean and communications team members create and implement a proactive, short, and long-term communication plan for SP2. Components will include social media strategy for dean's twitter account, School's Facebook, twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn in coordination with social media accounts for the School's Centers and Program. Responsibility for identifying internal/external, local/national/international media and news outlets likely to feature SP2 and creating plan to develop relationships with the organizations utilizing Board and faculty relationships whenever possible. Proactively recommend feature stories based on SP2 research/programming and alignment with current events.

Maintain relationships with media representatives and contacts for University-wide publications to pitch stories for print and online publications.

Meet every other month with representatives from each of SP2's departments who have marketing communications responsibilities. Set agenda for and lead quarterly meetings for the school's marketing working group. Meet as least quarterly with representatives from DAR's marketing and communications office.

Working collaboratively with the Office of Admissions, the School's degree programs, and external consultants to provide guidance on and manage the development of promotional materials such as admissions brochures, etc.

Manage marketing/design consultants on an as needed basis for projects such as videos, print publications, event invitations, and newsletters.

Oversight of School's crisis communications plan. Convene crisis communication committee on an as-needed basis. Review and edit crisis communications statements prepared by staff writer. Finalize process for publishing a crisis communications statement and sharing with all relevant stakeholders.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Bachelor s degree in business, communication, public relations and/or marketing and 3-5 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. Excellent written and communication skills are essential (writing samples required). Must have ability to manage multiple projects in a goal- and deadline-oriented environment with established metrics, and to work independently and as a strong team player. Previous supervisory experience a plus. Must be a strong relationship builder -- both with internal and external partners. Must have social media experience. Should be able to analyze and concisely articulate issues and to work with a diverse group of constituents. Occasional weekend and evening work required.
