ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN ARCHITECTURE
COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE & URBAN DESIGN
The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts invites applications for a full-time tenure-track assistant professor in the College of Architecture and Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design with a focus on the intersection of architecture, urbanism, and the humanities. The position will work in close partnership with Washington University’s Center for the Humanities on The Divided City, an initiative funded by the Mellon Foundation to study the ongoing issues of urban segregation defined broadly and globally. The appointment will begin in August 2018.
The faculty seeks a dynamic scholar-designer-artist-teacher with expertise in the both the theory and practice of architecture as it relates to urbanism and to the social constructs of urban space. The ideal candidate will be able to collaborate within the school and across disciplines with humanities scholars, landscape architects, legal scholars, sociologists, geographers, GIS cartographers, and others to understand, analyze, and address the ongoing realities of segregation, inequality, and isolation in today’s global cities.
It is expected that the person in this position will teach the equivalent of four courses per academic year including studio and seminar courses, conduct ambitious research and creative activity, participate in student advising and mentoring, and provide leadership to the school, university, and profession.
Teaching responsibilities will include instruction primarily in the College of Architecture and Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design with potential for teaching in the Master of Fine Arts program as well as in appropriate Arts & Sciences departments. The assistant professor may also advise Master of Science students in architectural history and theory and fields related to the faculty member’s area of specialization.
Applicants are expected to have a Masters degree in architecture and/or urban design or an equivalent combination of a professional degree in architecture and five or more years of experience with a record of significant accomplishment. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to successfully teach architecture and/ or urban design studio as well as seminar and/or lecture courses at the university level. Applicants should also demonstrate a clear interest through their professional accomplishments in community engagement and social practice with a strong commitment to collaborative teaching and research.
