Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno, Office of Information Technology is recruiting a Server Administrator for their IT Operations division. This Server Administrator position will support Microsoft operating systems and server system software. Responsibilities are centered around the initial setup and ongoing administration of the infrastructure that presents an enterprise space management system. This includes securing, monitoring, patching, upgrading, troubleshooting, reporting, and planning for the long-term success of this ecosystem. Success in the role will require strong technical skills and experience managing a complex, interdependent service coupled with the ability to communicate with internal and external consumers of the service at all technical and organizational levels. In addition, this position will also ensure system provisioning and maintenance that is consistent with University goals, industry best practices and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications

High School graduation and four (4) years of related work experience; OR

Associate's Degree from an accredited institution and three (3) years of related work experience; OR

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and (2) year of related work experience; OR

Master's Degree from an accredited institution and one (1) year related work experience.

Related experience: IT experience in an enterprise or university environment managing or maintaining Linux/Windows servers.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Microsoft SQL Server and/or Oracle application management
  • Linux/Windows desktop and server operating systems
  • Apache/IIS Web environments
  • Basic TCP/IP, DNS, and DHCP network theory
  • Project management methodology
  • Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft System Center, Salt, and Icinga
  • VMware VSphere or other virtualization technologies
  • General storage and backup technologies
  • Box or other cloud collaborative storage
  • Bash scripting, Powershell, SSL certificates, and MySQL
  • Ability to read and follow vendor documentation for the installation, configuration and trouble-shooting software/hardware issues.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills along with the ability to communicate technical information in manner that a non-technical person can understand.


Compensation Grade

Administrative Faculty Grade - B

Schedule and Travel Requirements

The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.

Occasional Travel for conferences or training.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees

Department Information

Office of Information Technology, Operations Division maintains and provides system administration for the centralized physical and virtual server infrastructure to support file, web, database, backup, and application services on Windows and Linux/UNIX. OIT operations also support High-Performance Computing for research and manages critical data centers on campus. Additionally, third-party app specialists provide support and maintenance for major applications in use throughout the University.
