As the state's flagship university, the University of Washington serves more students than any other institution in the Northwest — more than 92,000 annually. The UW is the oldest public university in the Pacific Northwest and one of the preeminent research universities in the world. Celebrating its 156th anniversary, the University is led by a senior leadership team committed to engaging the world's complex challenges. It has a strong culture of cross-disciplinary initiatives and offers a remarkable environment for collaborative projects and partnerships among colleges, schools and campuses. It's location in the entrepreneurial and technology-rich Pacific Northwest also provides an excellent environment for the School of Public Health to engage with national and international leaders, to raise private funds to support school and University initiatives, and to collaborate with other academic partners around the world.

Additionally, the UW's groundbreaking Population Health Initiative, launched in 2016, demonstrates the University's commitment to addressing the challenges in creating and sustaining healthy populations. The initiative offers the opportunity for School of Public Health faculty, staff and students to pursue collaborative research, teaching and engagement across the University and its campuses, as well as in our communities locally and globally. This initiative builds on the UW's work with more than 130 organizations focused on population and global health. From the Gates Foundation and PATH, to organizations concentrating on individual nations or specific maladies, few places in the world offer more opportunities for collaboration and collective impact than the UW.

This is a remarkable moment for the UW's School of Public Health as it holds the potential to build on the strong pillars of its accomplishments to lead new initiatives that will improve the health and well-being of communities around the world. The successful candidate will be a proven leader with the ability to develop and implement, within an institutional context of shared governance, a vision for the future that enhances and expands the strengths of the school's noteworthy faculty, students and staff. This will require outstanding communication skills, the ability to inspire and collaborate with numerous and diverse stakeholders, within the school, across the University, and in the communities we serve. The candidate should also demonstrate experience in academic and fiscal management, strategic management and managerial skills, and a genuine commitment to advancement and fundraising. The successful candidate will have a distinguished record as a scholar, and the academic achievements that are appropriate for an appointment at the rank of professor at the University of Washington. Moreover, the dean will be expected to demonstrate commitment to advancing the University's research, teaching and service and engagement missions, as well as a proven track record of addressing and advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in the faculty, staff, students, and curriculum. Finally, the dean must be an effective advocate for the School of Public Health as one among the numerous schools, colleges, and programs across the University, as well as among the variety of important national and international constituencies.
