Job Description Summary
The University of Pennsylvania Class of 1923 Ice Skating Rink, located adjacent to the east entrance of Penn Park, has been serving the community since it first opened over 50 years ago in 1970. The 60,000 square foot facility boasts approximately 2,000 seats, locker rooms, concession stands, and event rooms that can accommodate private groups of up to 50 people. The ice surface itself is 85' x 200', totaling 16,327 square feet of frozen fun and healthy activity. The main entrance into the lower concourse is off of Lower Walnut Street. The rink may also be accessed via its entrance on Walnut Street. The Penn Ice Rink meets a wide range of needs. The Ice Rink is normally open 18 hours per day, 7 days per week. The rink is home to many hockey clubs for men and women, along with annual tournament play. The skating season spans from mid-June to late April each year.

Job Description

The Ice Rink Operations Manager is a full-time, exempt (monthly paid) year-round position. This position may include a flexible nights and weekends schedule.

Reporting to the Ice Rink Director, the Operations Manager is responsible for the overall readiness of the ice rink facility to serve ice rink customers efficiently and effectively. This includes, but is not limited to, routine inspection and repair planning to all plumbing, electrical, lighting, mechanical, and HVAC systems. Responsibilities also include management and maintenance to the ice surface, dasher board system, ice resurfacing equipment and ice grooming equipment. The Operations Manager shall coordinate the installation of new ice sheets including paint and markings and the proper removal of the ice sheet at seasonal closing. Responsibilities also include management and repairs to arena sound system. Coordinate maintenance and vendor services to facility working with Penn Facility & Real Estate Service (FRES). Coordinate scheduling triennial physical plant assessment with engineer vendor and provide maintenance recommendations to Director based upon that assessment.

Job Duties:

The Operations Manager is responsible for:
  • The inventory of all ice rink tools, equipment, and supplies as well as the orderly and secure placement and storage of these items.
  • Repairs to facility property to include doors, flooring, cove base, painted surfaces, bleachers, benches, tables, chairs, display cases, signage, and other similar items.
  • To work with rink vendors coordinating the anticipated need for supplies and services, ordering of supplies and services, receiving and placing items into inventory, and reporting receipt of goods. In executing these duties, the Operations Manager will manage the Ice Rink's Purchase card, completing monthly reports and reconciliations of its use.
  • Oversee janitorial services.


High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's Degree preferred with 3- 5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in Operational Management is required.
  • Experience in Ice Rink operations is preferred.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as scheduled. Ability to lift 24-50lbs.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to a diverse customer base.
  • Adaptability, enabling the Operations Manager to respond quickly to a shifting reality and adjust initiatives and priorities accordingly
  • Organizational skills and the flexibility to jump from priority to priority, which are essential to a role that juggles a variety of functions and projects

Must be able to pass background checks from Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the federal government with both criminal and child welfare divisions.
