Job Description Summary
Customized Programs are a critical part of Wharton Executive Education (WEE) portfolio. Reporting to the Vice Dean of Wharton Executive Education, Managing Director, Custom Programs (MD, Custom) will lead the Custom Business Unit with complete responsibility for achieving revenue and contribution targets for the business unit. The Custom portfolio includes all of WEE's programs customized to the needs of corporations across the world, as well as programs offered in partnership with industry associations. MD, Custom will lead a team of about 20 professionals engaged in functions such as Business Development, Customized Program Design and Program Delivery Operations. To achieve the revenue goals, the MD will ensure our program designs remain cutting-edge. The MD will ensure that our programs are marketed effectively and marketing efforts are followed by appropriate sales conversion efforts. The MD and his/her team will have overall responsibility for securing new custom clients as well as ensuring that existing clients continue to work with WEE. The MD will ensure that programs are executed smoothly by the Delivery Operations team, and the team follows-up with past participants to create lifelong relationships with WEE.

The Managing Director, Custom will partner with the Managing Director, Operations to ensure all of the business unit's operations are managed effectively and efficiently to ensure contribution goals are met, and the operating systems, customer facing as well as internal, are well organized. The MD will collaborate with heads of other business units (Open Enrollment, LIVE and Online) to discover and deliver on synergistic opportunities. The MD will collaborate with the Vice Dean and MD, Operations to set annual budget goals, develop a strategic plan to achieve the set goals, and lead the Custom team to execute and deliver on these goals. The MD will have an acute understanding of client needs, competitive offerings, Wharton faculty capabilities; and partner with Wharton and Penn faculty to bring the very best of our institution to our client organizations and learners. Blending sound strategic thinking with flawless execution, and the ability to inspire his/her team, the MD will ensure that the Custom Business Unit leads by continuing to grow in revenues, contribution, as well as external perceptions such as FT Rankings.

Job Description
  • Manage the origination, design, delivery and retention of in-person custom programs offered by Wharton Executive Education with complete responsibility of achieving revenue and contribution targets. This includes managing all existing clients, securing new business clients, and ensuring that programs are of the highest quality as measured by classroom ratings, client feedback post program and external rankings. Under the direction of the Vice Dean, partner with Wharton faculty, and others when needed, to ensure that the very best of Wharton is included in WEE's custom offerings. Work with the MD Operations to set Custom budget and goals and ensure the budget and targets are met.
  • Work collaboratively with the Heads of other business units and the Head of Operations. Partner with LIVE and Online business units to launch and support custom programs that require multiple learning modalities; those with primary responsibility in the custom business unit, as well as programs housed in LIVE and Online business units. Collaborate with the Head of OE to find synergistic opportunities. Ensure that WEE's complete portfolio of WEE programs is promoted in clients' organizations as well as to past participants.
  • Lead a team of professionals involved in Business Development, Program Design and Program Delivery. Set goals for each team leader, evaluate their performance, and support their professional growth.
  • Work with the Head of Operations to continuously improve effectiveness and efficiency of all operating systems in the Custom Business Unit. Set yearly goals for such improvements and be responsible for achieving these goals.
  • Engage in deep monitoring of client needs, competitive offerings, and Wharton capabilities to identify gaps. Be prepared to represent WEE (and Wharton if needed) to clients and at conferences. Under the direction of the Vice Dean, represent WEE in meetings with other Wharton and Penn groups when needed.

QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor's degree and 7-10 years' experience in Executive Education in a Business School with a significant and successful custom program portfolio, or in a senior L&D role in a corporation; Master's degree in a related field is preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Proven success in either Program Design and Delivery, or Business Development of Customized Programs is essential. Demonstrated ability to understand and influence client needs based on expertise and partner with business school faculty to launch innovative new offerings is required. The chosen candidate must have a collaborative yet performance oriented mind-set, with the ability to inspire others. Long term vision combined with the ability to deliver on pre-set goals in the short term will be an asset. Proven ability to meet revenue and contribution goals by designing and delivering offerings that are viewed as world-class and managing the costs to deliver these programs is essential. The person will be required to travel domestically and internationally as needed.

TARGETED SALARY RANGE: $170K-$200K subject to approval. This salary range is only applicable to this job posting.
