Counselor – Financial Aid Office – Michael J. Grant Campus

Announcement is hereby made for a full-time (12-month), tenure track Counselor position beginning immediately on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood.   Suffolk County Community College is an open admissions institution committed to serving a diverse student population in a variety of degree and career programs.

This is a Unit III position covered under the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the College.

Job Description:

The counselor (12-month) reports to the Director of Financial Aid.  The counselor will provide financial aid counseling services to the general student population and targeted student groups, and assist in providing other counseling services as needed. Specific responsibilities will include:

 1.           Provide Financial Aid counseling services to the general student population and targeted groups, including students at risk of losing their financial aid eligibility due to their lack of academic progress.

2.            Meet with financial aid applicants individually and in groups to provide information and assistance with the Financial Aid and enrollment processes.

3.            Counsel students about maintaining eligibility for financial aid, including academic progress requirements as well as provide student development services to prospective, new and continuing students.

4.            Review financial aid applications for completeness, perform verification of applicant data, submit applications for corrections, monitor completeness of files, and package eligible students. 

5.            Review and process student and/or parent loan requests and adjustments for federal loans.

6.            Review and process Financial Aid professional judgment, dependency override, and academic progress appeals.

7.            Develop and present programs and workshops to large audiences consisting of high school students, parents, community constituents and college/campus groups. Represent Suffolk County Community College at various events both off and on campus.

8.            Assist in staff training and development to assure compliance with federal and state rules and regulations and institutional policies and procedures. Assist the Director of Financial Aid with ensuring Financial Aid service delivery is responsive to student needs.

9.            Serve on campus and college-wide committees.

10.          Assist in other counseling areas, if necessary, during peak periods, as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Student Services and/or the Director of Financial Aid and perform other duties as assigned.

 

 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

A Master’s degree in Counseling, Student Personnel in Higher Education, Student Development, Social Work,  Applied Psychology, Special Education or equivalent (i.e., depending on specific responsibilities of the position) and two years’ experience in providing financial aid  counseling are required. Candidates must also possess effective verbal, written, and communication skills, and computer literacy.
