Job Description Summary
The Senior Research Coordinator is responsible for managing the ICP-OES service center and for overseeing the maintenance and use of all shared research instruments in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science (EES). The Senior Research Coordinator also serves as the Department's safety officer, coordinates with SAS Facilities about repairs in lab spaces, and is responsible for storing and organizing materials for teaching labs and field research.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Earth and Environmental Science (EES) combines elements of geology and geophysics, chemistry, physics, biology and mathematics to study the earth. Length and time scales of interest range from the atomic to the tectonic, from deep time to the present and future. Research in the Department encompasses the geochemistry and structure of earth materials, soil chemistry and mechanics, sediment transport and geomorphology, structural geology and geophysics, planetary geology, atmospheric chemistry, hydrological processes, climate, glaciology, geomicrobiology, fossilized and living organisms, and human impacts on the environment. DUTIES:

The Senior Research Coordinator will support analytical instrumentation use and maintenance for the Department of Earth and Environmental Science (EES). The Senior Coordinator works closely with faculty and students within EES, and others, in their use of research instruments including XRD, XRF, GF-AAS, and IC. An inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) is supported in a service center. As appropriate to each instrument, the coordinator provides basic instrument maintenance and calibration per manufacturer recommendations, maintains service contracts and arranges more advanced maintenance, provides training in sample preparation and instrument use, orders instrument parts and supplies, and manages scheduling and billing. Writing standard operating protocols for analytical instruments and other laboratory equipment may be required. The Senior Coordinator acts as the department's safety officer in overseeing the use of these instruments and in other research activities by working in collaboration with Penn's Office of Environmental Health and Radiation Safety. The Senior Coordinator supports teaching labs by cataloging and making available teaching materials and by keeping lab instruments in working order. The position may also support fieldwork by being responsible for storage of equipment and helping with logistics. The Senior Coordinator communicates with the building administrator to request repairs within laboratory spaces.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree with 2 to 3 years of experience in research or lab management, or equivalent combination of education and experience, is required. Master's or PhD in the Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, or a related field preferred. The position requires a technical background in analytical instrumentation. Experience with an ICP-OES is preferred. Applicants should have strong organizational and communication skills and be able to work unsupervised.

The salary for this position is expected to be from $44,000 to $60,000 a year.
